11thdimension
Hi! I'm interested in sonata form but I am having difficulty (learning how to) modulate into the dominant. Any advice?
Morivou
Modulate to the dominant.... well, one of the most common ways is a "SECONDARY DOMINANT"... look that up somewhere. 11thdimension
Right, and I've been toying with that but I can't seem to find anything on proper voicing and transitions.
Morivou
Proper voicing? There REALLY isn't any... unless you are doing four part harmony. Transitions are all about trial and error. It's also the MAIN thing MOST composers struggle with. Making ideas connect is a very hard thing to do. Just keep trying. Maybe if you post what you've got, I can help you out on what direction to go in.
Dev
You could also use a pivot chord - a chord common to both keys. vi in I is ii in V.
