blackballoons Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Jennifer Higdon inspires me a lot...off the top of my head, though, this is pretty inspiring too: YouTube - I.Clarke Quote
HeckelphoneNYC Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Nature. Pictures of it make me think of a certain type of music, and that's how it works :) nature - Google Images Quote
shpena Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 Musica Andina !!! http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=F384B3AE19B31205 That always puts a tear to my eye and gets my inspiration going. I can never get enough of Andean Music :D Quote
Yachar Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Somehow... something that ticks for me is... Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Dunno why. They aren't the BEST band in the world, in fact, they might even show the real worst aspects of prog rock. Yet the ease with which they throw around notes seems to kind of make my juices flowing. Otherwise... my own emotions. And yes... of course pictures of nature. Quote
schrodingasdawg Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Lighting and temperature inspire me. I get the most inspiration at sunrise/sunset and dusk-like lighting when the temperature is around 15 centigrade. Especially if the sky is overcast. Quote
SYS65 Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 my own life, but I don't write music just like the way is my life .... I convert ... JMisciagno Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 Lately, my inspirations for composing have been emotions I've had, but listening to music of Allegri, Tallis, Byrd...(jump a few centuries), Schubert, Faur Quote
gosp Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 I'll be honest. Some sitcom had a musician star who bragged about making lots of money, sleeping with beautiful women, and not calling what he does real work. I always think back to that. Quote
Herr Kremlin Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Literature, popular culture (television, music, etc), other art, shapes, nature Quote
Kamen Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Mostly imagination, i.e. I inspire myself whenever I want. Quote
DoctorWho? Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 I live in Arizona and the sunsets are astonishingly beautiful. The cloud patterns here are amazing. When I happen to witness a good one I know I am seeing the finest composition one could ask for. Now if only I can convert that into sound... Quote

I will have to admit that the sunsets are nice, and so is Sedona and The Grand Canyon. But that's it ;) Quote

david ckwee Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 I get my inspiration mostly when I'm on the "porcelain throne", lol. :D Quote
Rodrigo Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Dunno why, but I feel inspired mostly when I'm sad. The result is that all the stuff I compose is basically... sad stuff. :( Quote
Joshua Luty Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 My inspiration comes from a pool of things. For instance, at the moment I'm trying to compose a suite based upon the Holocaust, including Auschwitz, Babi Yar, the Warsaw Ghetto, and so on. History is a great place to draw a topic from. Also, I've toiled with the idea of writing music based on a book, just whatever comes to my head whilst reading, although I wouldn't recommend this if the book has already been transferred to movie form. Nature is always a good thing to be inspired by, and one day I hope to write a suite based on some of my favorite flowers. There's so much out there to be inspired on for topics. When it comes to the actual music itself, my inspiration lies in late-romantic and modern composers. I also draw heavily on progressive rock such as Gentle Giant and Yes. There's many interesting rhythmic variations in there to be found, including the wonders of 7/4 time. Quote
