October Competition (2009)

Featured Replies

EDIT: The October competition is actually Jose's. I made a silly mistake; sorry about this...I'm up for November though. :]

I'll enter (for now!). Sounds like a good one =)

I'll join. Only question is:

Does sound quality count?

P.S.

I'd put another post to say "Thank you" to Morivou, but I don't want to take up more space. lol.

Nope. You don't even have to submit audio, if you feel it would ruin the piece.

I'll enter. Sign me up. I may get a bit experimental in this one.

Black, you said it must be a chamber work, can you list the instruments that may be used?

Any instruments, any combination of orchestral/band instruments. Preferably without electronics though. :]

If you want to use something like shakuhachi, be my guest...just make sure the playback is accurate, or that the notation is easily interpreted. Otherwise no limtations, but please keep it 6 or less players.

I will judge.

I will honestly say that I have issues with Heckel being a judge in a competition when he's only 10 years old with no real compositional experience under his belt yet. Jus' sayin.'

I kind of want to agree with you, Justin...but then again, the criteria are much less technical. They still will be, but there's no technical emphasis.

Welcome to the judges' club, Mr. Tokke.

Since when do we have age+experience limits on anything? Most of us don't have that much "compositional experience under our belts". Plus, you can be clueless (or, to a certain degree, "clueful") no matter how old you are ;)

YOUNG composers.

I said I would compete, but I don't really care if I do or if I judge...

JUST LET ME DO SOMETHING AND I'M HAPPY

You're letting a 10-year-old judge a competition?

The point is that no judge in any of these competitions is picked based on "qualifications". Sure, we could also require all judges to be over 30, with at least twenty years of composing experience and a Masters degree in composition. But to me the objection seems rather arbitrarily based around "I'm experienced enough to judge and everyone that's younger/less experienced than me isn't."

Either you ask for certain qualifications, or you don't. (And frankly, if Heckelphone hadn't announced it so clearly himself, would we all know his exact age?)

Yes...
