I've been having a problem with your site. Every time I try to view somebody's composition, my computer has to reload the page again and again until it just gives up. There has been no relief and I am growing tired of this latest trend. Furthermore, everybody else seems to be able to view compositions, it's just me who can't. Any help on this situation is needed ASAP please.

Another little issue that I hope can be resolved. I just posted a comment on someone's piece. When I added a picture from imageshack, it showed up in the reply, but so did a lot of extra code. Likewise, my simple :P was not just a smiley with his tongue sticking out. It came a long with this line of code,

<img src="http://network.youngcomposers.com/elgg/ipb/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif" alt="" />

followed by my smiley. What gives?

Btw, this was a problem when I was replying via the network page, not the forum. For example, the smiley I added in here didn't come with the code because I replied in the forum instead of the network.

Peace on Earth,

-John

Please use Firefox or Chrome until we resolve the problems with this site loading slowly, or hanging. I am looking to translate BB codes more effectively, so sit tight.

Good news! We are not done with development yet, and we could possibly go another 2 1/2 months for more updates. The reason is because I am not satisfied with the layout/looks/speed of the site. I am satisfied with the functionality though, the hardest part is done.

My goal is to get new ideas from the community in this next phase. Since the only way I can succeed with this site is by getting feedback from the community, James and Hillary will represent the community by helping me with architecting the updates. Furthermore, I need you guys to criticize the network...this should be real easy. Your job is to criticize something you dislike, and offer a solution on how to fix it. Simple enough?

Whether you don't like the skin, lack of skin integration, the design, the layout of a particular page, just communicate that to me. The only catch is, you can't criticize something unless you offer a solution, or how you would like to see it addressed. I can't promise that we will address "every" criticism, but if James, Hillary and myself feel that the criticisms and offered solutions are in the best interest of the entire community, we will keep that into consideration.

Let the criticisms begin!

I am a new member by one day. Two things I think need some work. Any time a username is on the screen we should be able to click on the name to go to their profile....this is huge. Also it would be nice to have a email saying if there is a comment on my profile. If these things have been mentioned I am sorry to reiterate. I am so thankful for finding this place. It is so wonderful to post music and right away have people comment and give me feedback on it.

You are in luck. We are working on these problems. As for an email being sent to you after someone comments to your music, make sure you go into your settings within the forum. Go to the top right, click your name, click settings. Then click the "forum" tab, and you can manage any watched forums here.

Chopin, I know this is IPB and not network - but it's not very obvious how to access the forum settings. How will you be dealing with this? I could add a link there in front of the sign out and help links in the box, but many you have something else in store for later.

I don't know if this is normal but this is my first day on YC and I tried to upload my first composition and it wouldn't let me. Hopefully this can get fixed. I'm really excited to try this whole new thing out! :D

I've always wanted a "solo instrumental" forum. But never sure how to organise it. Should piano and keyboards be under it? Does guitar belong with keyboard under "polyphonic solo instruments" and is winds and percussion seperate? confusing.

I agree that there should be a solo forum, and it should include piano and keyboards. If you decide to do sub-forums you could separate it by instrument family and add an extra forum for piano/keyboard plus another one for "other," just in case we get theremin solos or something.

Then my question is, would a solo for theremin with piano go under solo instrumental or chamber?

Maybe I don't understand the question, but a piece for theremin and piano would go in chamber (a "solo for theremin with piano" isn't possible because when more than one instrument is involved you no longer have a solo, as a genre).

Also, you wouldn't need a category such as polyphonic solo instruments (piano and weird instances aside) if you did the split by instrument family. A piece for solo guitar, for example, could simply go under the string category in the proposed solo forum.

You can't deny that a number of "solo pieces" come with piano by default, though. Unless you want to just call the category, "unaccompanied solo instrumental works"... which is a mouthful.

Hmmm, I guess that's true (I can think of many pieces for "solo voice and piano"), but these pieces are more likely to be considered chamber works (and if there's a singer it would go in our Choral, Vocal forum). I think the forum title "Solo Instrumental Works" is obvious enough, but "Unaccompanied Instrumental Works" is fine too.

Also I'd like to see Relinquished Titles in the archives rather than in the upload section. I suppose it's nice that it's very easy to find right now, but it makes scrolling through the site just a little bit longer (I usually collapse the archives since I so rarely look there, but I always have the upload and discussion sections expanded). Just one opinion.

Agreeing - I don't quite understand the point of the relinquished forum, other than it having an awesome sounding title. The way I see it (which is fuzzily and unclear and at great distance) it seems like it deserves to in Uploads as much as Incomplete Works would. Maybe combine Incomplete and Relinquished works?

Aha! Yes that's been bugging me too. Incomplete Works seems like it should be in the upload forum.

Sorry - probably again I'm missing something again, but...

- it seems there is no obious way to go from the "forum page" of a subscriber from his "main page" with the uploaded music/videos. More generally, I don't find any easy way to come back from forum.youngcomposers.com to www.youngcomposers.com.

- why the Forum profile of the user is set independently of the "main" user page (that one with the music)? For example, I have a photo on the main user page and this does not clone to the user page. It is expected to have two different profiles?

I'm a newcomer and probably I am missing something obvious.

Thanks for YC!

Please note that this forum is completely automated, and can only be controlled by moderators and reviewers. The main use for Relinquished Titles is if a member wants to free up space while retaining his reviews. The old way was such that if someone wanted to remove titles to free up space, the entire thread would have been eliminated. This is bad for morale, since reviewers put their time into this site to critique titles. Thus, the only solution I could come up with was Relinquished Titles, a sort of "trash bin" or "preservation".

Upon deleting works, the audio file is physically removed freeing up space for the member. Furthermore, the title will have no presence in the network (eliminating the title from the search, directory, browse and profile). The thread though, and all intelligence associated with it (the reviews) will remain preserved in one location, Relinquished Titles.

I probably should explain all of this in a FAQ.

I have two criticisms:

First, the network has been excruciatingly slow the past two - three days. There have been times where I've gone to review a work and it's taken 10 mins to load the network. I thought at first it was my computer BUT at the same time I can still browse and peruse other websites. So, i'm not sure that it's my connection speed.

Second, I am still having problems logging on through the network. I have tried to reset my password and it says the password is inaccurate - even though it's the one I use to login daily with.

Posted

When I get home from work, I will restart Apache to see if that solves the speed issues. As for you having login problems, this is alarming. How are you able to upload music with these problems? Resetting the password should be flawless. I need an example of what is wrong with your particular account, so any screenshots of the misbehavior would be desired.

ok, within the forum:

Editing post... the first click on "Edit" does nothing, the second click opens the post to edit, sometimes I gets open but I can't put the cursor inside the text box, is still like "read only", I refresh the page and click the Edit again, and once more and this time I can edit.

Sometimes the thread appear with the "new content" icon but there's nothing new.

In the Network:

Is horribly slow, when I scroll the page it moves like it would be a truly heavy job for the computer (I have Phenom 2.6G x3 + 4GB Ram) .

When clicking a link the IE8 almost collaps while changing the page, after long the new page appears but is still slow.

Looks like for the moment I have no misplaced objects, neither login problems but I set "remeber me"

The BB conde remains off in pages.

ammmmm When the new layout-skin you showed us will be applied ?

Any forum bugs I honestly cannot address at this time. However anything to do with network/forum integration I can. I understand the network is a complete mess right now, and most of this should be addressed with the new iteration, which should be complete in a month before any testing. Testing again before implementation could take more time. The reason why things are going slowly is because the only help I have right now with regards to site construction are the people who I hire. I clearly have made mistakes along the way, but they have already been made, and I am trying my best to repair any damage.
