HeckelphoneNYC Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 February: Heckel Well, only 5 more days 'till February... time flies, doesn't it? So for this competition, you must write a piece that has a Violin, Viola, and your choice of either a percussion or a woodwind instrument or 2. The piece must be no shorter than 3 minutes, and no longer than 10. Pieces above and below will be given consideration but will be penalized. The piece must have a small, 1/2-2 minute section where it is dissonant, atonal or 12 tone. This competition has one rule that will really set it apart from other competitions. Judges will score, but the winning competitor from the judges point will listen to and critique the work besides his or her own. Who he decides will be second place, and the rest will stack down. Each judge can award a competitor 20 points: 10 for basic sound of the piece 5 for orchestration and 5 for originality and creativity You must submit your piece by 12:00 am March 1st. Results will be posted within the following 1-2 weeks. I would like to have 5 judges (including myself). Competitors: j.hall DJ Fatuus cjdarnieder Chris CheeseLord jimmyjucin MattZ2007 Judges: Heckelphone224 benxiwf jawoodruff
jawoodruff Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Count me in! I would like to enter this coveted competition!
DJ Fatuus Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Can the percussion be a piano? :phones: I guess not. And can you clarify the special rule a bit? The winner chooses the 2nd place work?
HeckelphoneNYC Posted January 27, 2010 Author Posted January 27, 2010 Yes, the winner chooses second place. Would you like to enter? And no, piano is not accepted.
j.hall Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Is it allowed to have 1 percussion and 1 woodwind or do I have to choose between either 1-2 percussion and 1-2 woodwind?
HeckelphoneNYC Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 Yes, if you want to I suppose you could have 1 percussion and 1 woodwind, but if that's the case, then you can't have 2 of either.
j.hall Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Ok thanks, I decided to settle on two woodwinds anyhow. I'm in btw. :)
jawoodruff Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Ok, now I'm confused... are you saying we can choose the instruments we want to compose for? Your original competition announcement said Violin, Viola AND percussion or 1 wind instrument. So... from that i take it Violin and Viola are mandatory? I already started the piece for Vn, Va, and Timpani... is that ok?
benxiwf Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Not my post, but yes, from what I gather, vln and vla are mandatory.. then you can add any 1-2 percussion or ww instruments. So, yours would be fine.

I already started the piece for Vn, Va, and Timpani... is that ok? I took that to mean Violin and Viola AND 2 woodwinds... j hall was just using short hand. Would you like to enter? Yes I would! But I said that last month and didn't have time. But I have a few ideas sketched, so yes!
HeckelphoneNYC Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 Violin and Viola are mandatory, yes. I will add you all to the list!
Christopher Dunn-Rankin Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I will enter this competition.
HeckelphoneNYC Posted February 1, 2010 Author Posted February 1, 2010 You got it! I think.... okay just kidding. I should add, everyone else please say if you would like to compete or judge!! (hint hint, Chris :P)

(hint hint, Chris :P) Oh - I'm competing in this one. Does it have to be ONLY that small section of atonality, or can the whole thing be atonal?
cjdarnieder Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I'd like to enter, if it's still possible. :)
HeckelphoneNYC Posted February 4, 2010 Author Posted February 4, 2010 Oh - I'm competing in this one. Does it have to be ONLY that small section of atonality, or can the whole thing be atonal? Whole thing can be, if you want!
Gamma Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 You can take me out, I turned my attention to other things for now.
HeckelphoneNYC Posted February 17, 2010 Author Posted February 17, 2010 Welcome to the competition! I need more judges now... really need more judges....
CheeseLord Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Hi Heckel!! Do you have to post a score?? If not, count me in as a competitor :)
jawoodruff Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I finished the piece about a week ago for this. BUT, as you need judges... I would like to move to be a judge.
