Kamen Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Let me repeat myself: Sound is the word of science which I associate with the physical / acoustical side of things - sound pressure level, velocity, frequency and wavenumber, timbre, phase, amplitude, properties of the source, the medium, the auditory system, etc. When I refer to the quality and specs of an amplifier or a piano while I am hearing Beethoven coming from it, I think and speak of sound. Music is the word of art which I associate with (purposeful) creation, expression, association, interpretation, feelings, emotions, thoughts, ideas, philosophy, etc. When I refer to the idea behind a piece - how it makes me feel, what I associate it with, etc. - no matter how noisy or tonal it is, no matter how it is organised, I think of music. Music is sound in which you find meaning. Quote
SSC Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I think that the problem with the whole thing is simply that the definition has different levels. There's a language/semantic level, a cognitive/biological level and a cultural level. I take the definition on the biological level, since it's much simpler to me as everything else varies from person to person (languages and cultures vary too much between eachother, but humans are the practically same biologically everywhere. That's a good starting point as having a definition that accounts for the humanity, rather than any single culture. Just like biology can make generalizations about the way all of humanity has two arms and two legs and be on the money.) As for what everyone language/semantic or culturally defines music as, well as the thread shows that's already varied enough without asking more than ten people. Quote
pliorius Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 i've been thinking lots to post some moderate points about thesis ''brain=music'', but can't find enough motivation (being too hangover most of the time) to do that. only - thesis that definitions varying from languaga to language (i.e. cultures)imply 'falsity' is a complete mindfuck to thesis that you can define music by ONE language i.e. scientific one. only this for now. HeckelphoneNYC Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Melodies and harmonies mixed with other lines to create textures and colors that create: Music. I dunno, just something for the heck of it :P Quote
