If I were you, I would find a torrent or file that has most of these music theory books available to download. If you like it, then getting the bound version would be a good investment. That is how I bought the Berlioz and Rimsky books. :)

I know none of the both books you mention above. I'm looking for something more than just an introduction to serial or atonal composition. Since I want to play around with twelve-tone theory within a tonal context. Is straus covering that?

Straus doesn't exactly talk about using a row in a tonal context, but there's a great chapter on 12-tone operations (with examples from famous works) and you can apply the knowledge to your own compositions. Straus is the standard text on methods of moving away from tonality in the twentieth-century, but some techniques can be applied to tonal compositions as well.

Never seen that book.

As for twelve-tone theory in tonal context - I'd say just don't follow what is usually followed in atonal context to avoid establishing tonic / center.

I just picked that book up at my school library a few days ago. As for reading it, YES! recommended and as for buying..well I'm going the library route but if I had the money I would probably buy it. It looks like it may take some re-reads to full get ALL the content. Let me know how it goes.
