johna Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Hello, new member here, though I've been a lurker on and off for some time. Came across a bit of a conundrum, and useful information is hard to come by.. What is the best way to notate random arpeggios for strings in which the player should randomly arpeggiate between the four strings? Somewhere in the back of my mind I vaguely recall there may have been a more or less established symbol for this (possibly one of Penderecki's), but I can't for the life of me find it again.. Thanks in advance, JohnA Quote
benxiwf Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 I don't know what penderecki used or what is common, but I normally just try to think of what would be clear to the player..So I would probably just notate the four open strings as sixteenth notes or eighth notes or with some exotic beam to show what notes you want and then follow this with a wavy line up and down over the duration you want it to last and then write above randomly arpegggiate these notes either above the passage or in an explanation before the piece... MusicFiend Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Random arpeggiation? G-D-A-E-A-D-G (Up the open strings then down?) Really quickly? This kind of takes me back to Suzuki Viola Book 5... Seitz's Concerto in C minor. There was this one passage and it was written 32nd notes going up and down. There were notes other than open strings, but it's pretty simple... Unless you want something other than that? Just write the notes out. That's usually the best options. String players are good at getting the "this is what it looks like... but this is what it's supposed to sound like" thing. Quote
