MattZ2007 Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Hello! Sorry that this is a day late, but welcome to the May Competition. In keeping with the theme of last month, this month's competition must use an ambiance recording (be sure to give credit to your sources!). You may use any combination of instruments, but the ambiance must be heard. The piece must also be at least 2 minutes long. Judges: 1. MattZ2007 2. 3. 4. 5. Competitors: 1. Bachian 2. JaWoodruff (submitted) 3. SergeofArniVillage (submitted) 4. Jean-Paul 5. doctormusic (submitted) 6. jimmyjuicin
Jimmyjuicin Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 So kind of along the lines of one of those "nature sounds" cds with the smooth music in the foreground? Like not exactly that but that kind of idea?
MattZ2007 Posted May 4, 2010 Author Posted May 4, 2010 So kind of along the lines of one of those "nature sounds" cds with the smooth music in the foreground? Like not exactly that but that kind of idea? Kind of. You have the track playing, and compose around it, so it's basically the same idea. This will be good for anyone thinking about composing for film, as you compose the music to pick a theme. The goal of this is to paint a picture. But it's unlike the nature cds in that it doesn't need to be calm. You can make the music set during a thunderstorm, and make an epic score. The options are limitless.
jawoodruff Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I'm not sure if I can do something like this with my current notation program. I use Finale, and I don't think there is a way to import this sort of thing into it. Otherwise, I'd be interested in doing it. :(

I have Finale 2009, and with it, I can import audio.
jawoodruff Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Finale 2009. How do you do it? And where can I find audio?
MattZ2007 Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Finale 2009. How do you do it? And where can I find audio? You can find the background stuff online at places like freesound.org. As far as the audio goes, you can go to Midi/Audio in the top bar, then go to Audio --> Import Audio.
Jimmyjuicin Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I'll give this a shot... there's no guarantee I'll be able to do it due to limited technological resources, but if i can find a way i'lll submit something :santa:
doctormusic Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 I would like to participate as a contestant, but I'm not sure if it is considered ambient. My piece is called Anno Domination. http://www.box.net/shared/c0jfp6afv2

As far as the audio goes, you can go to Midi/Audio in the top bar, then go to Audio --> Import Audio. I'll try it, put me down as a contestant for now, but as JrCrammer said, I might have to drop out. Edit: This isn't working out for me, too much work and troubles with audio on finale. Sorry!
SergeOfArniVillage Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 I'll do it! This is my entry: http://www.youngcomposers.com/pg/Music/SergeOfArniVillage/composition?entry=40086
impresario Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Hey everyone, we realize Matt hasn't been active lately but the Youngcomposers staff would just like to let you know that this contest WILL be judged and finished with or without Matt. So get your entries in fast, by June 3rd!
MattZ2007 Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 Hello, everyone. I'm sorry for being inactive of late, finishing up school, job, singing lessons, etc., have kept me from having the time I'd like to devote to this. I'm back and will judge.
MattZ2007 Posted June 5, 2010 Author Posted June 5, 2010 I'm ready to judge the pieces (by the way, if anyone wants to e a judge just let me know), but not all of the pieces have been submitted yet! However I'm going to Florida for the following week, and am unsure as to the likelihood of having internet down there. So, I'll give the competitors a bit more time, but if the pieces aren't here when I get back (June 13) I'll unfortunately have to score without them. I apologize to those who have submitted their files, as this competition shouldn't last this long. P.S. None of this has a hostile intention towards the competitors who haven't submitted their works yet, please dont take it that way :).
SergeOfArniVillage Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 This is another entry: we can have more than one, right? http://www.box.net/shared/zvc5ufcf2v (MP3) http://www.box.net/shared/pa56rno2t0 (PDF Score)
jawoodruff Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 When will the results be released? It's almost 3 months since the end of the competition. If you can't do the results perhaps we can have the Reviewers adjudicate. 2
impresario Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Hey guys, I got a whole panel of people together and we all decided the winner of the May Competition! By a slight margin, as both pieces were exceptionally well done, the winner is... JASON! Congratulations to both JAWoodruff and SergeofArniVillage, and I will give you guys more in depth results (as in what you did good and bad, comments from members of the panel) upon my return next week. For now I'm off to see a Gustav Holst concert! Also, we decided not to count Anno Domination as it did not follow the requirements enough. 1
