Well, I imagine you already play a musical instrument, so you probably know how to read music. If not, I'd recommend starting by learning how. If you want to learn more about basic theory, there are countless websites that deal with theoretical matters, my favorite being http://teoria.com/ . If you want to go more in-depth, I'd recommend finding a book on harmony at your local bookstore or library. I also have a few pdf scans you might be interested in. You could also try to find someone to help you learn and write, such as a music teacher or student. Studying scores is also a great aid in studying and learning about music.

More important than learning all the theory associated with music, though, is determining what you want to convey and to express, and just letting your creative mind loose. Even without knowing much theory, you can easily compose very enjoyable music if you set your mind to it. Ask yourself: what do I want the listener to feel? What kind of style and attitude do I want to give this piece? Etc. Etc. the more you know about what you want to compose before sitting down and writing it, the easier the material should pop up into your head. :santa:
