impresario Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Hey everyone, instead of doing a certain group of instruments as a monthly competition, I decided to make this competition have a theme. So without further ado, the July competition challenge is to make a piece that demonstrates celebration! It must be an uplifting piece that depicts a happy, exiting, euphoric time. You will be judged out of fifty on the following: Personal Taste (Of the judge): 10 Euphoricness - 20 Technical: 10 Creativity: 10 (Technical will include a wide variety of things such as use of the ensemble, how playable it is, instrumentation, orchestration, use of dynamics and articulations, and score neatness.) You do not have to have a score to enter, but if you do not you can only get 40/50, (you'll score zero on the technical part) so scores are recommended. We will have five judges, myself included, and the winner will be decided by adding the five scores together, so whoever gets the most out of 250 (50 x 5 judges) wins. Otherwise, the only other rules are that it has to original, and written for this competition. No works already composed, and no stealing melodies, passages et cetera from other composers or pieces. Have fun! Deadline: August sixth (6th) at midnight, your time zone. I need five judges: 1. Impresario 2. Johnbucket 3. MichaelAlex 4. TheWannabeChopin 5. Jawoodruff I need a whole bunch of competitors! 1. JijGaat 2. InkWeaver 3. MariusChamberlin 4. JimmyJuicin 5. Peter_W. 6. JeremyL 7. Heklaphone45 8. Bachian 9. MusicFiend 10. Norby 11. PhRey 12. JohnMarinelli 13. 14. 15. etc.

Impresario 2. 3. 4. 5. I need a whole bunch of competitors! I don't know if I wanna be a judge or a competitor! D:
JijGaat Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Can't one be both a judge and a competitor, he just can't judge his own piece then? The deadline to submit is the 31st of July I presume? I think I will give this a try :)
impresario Posted July 1, 2010 Author Posted July 1, 2010 John you can be a judge, and jijgaat a competitor - yes the deadline is July 31st at midnight. I won't allow to be a judge and a competitor because it would throw off the mark of 250 if you didn't judge your own, sorry Michael. See how things work out in three days then decide!
JijGaat Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 lol you can just divide by 4 instead of 5 then ;) So add up all scores divide by 5 if 5 judges voted and divide by four of four judges voted ! Just maths :P
MariusChamberlin Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 I'm in. Is there a certain length these pieces should be? And any other rules/restrictions etc?
MichaelAlex Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 don't worry guys, I'll just judge. I want to be able to finish Against the Winds this month, and I know if I tackle this along with it, one of them will have to suffer. 1
JijGaat Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 I was just thinking: most competitions have only few competitors, so why shouldn't one be able to judge and compete at the same time? The score might be less objective, but come on, you want only 4 people to compete? Then what is the whole competition about :P. But I will try and make a very joyful piece! BTW: impressario, you got those rating categories from my last competition or what ;) ? Greetz
Mockingjay Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 I'd like to try this one. I just bought EWQLSO Gold so I'm excited to try it out while working on a piece for this competition! I usually write (or at least hear in my head) pieces in minor keys/serious pieces, so this will be an awesome exercise for me.
impresario Posted July 2, 2010 Author Posted July 2, 2010 MariusChamberlin - You are in! There are no restrictions, although the longer the piece the better. Personally, my personal preference would probably be higher for a piece that is longer because if it ended to abruptly it would ruin it. If you can pull off a short piece however, go for it! Otherwise, it just has to be original, no stealing. MichaelAlex - Thanks! You can be a judge, and I can't wait for your next piece! JijGaat - Yah, I pretty much got them from your competition! And it's because of what johnbucket said. Think of it as a school average - would it be easier to get an 80% average doing four classes or five - four obviously because you wouldn't have to worry about maintaining one more workload. TheWannabeChopin - Sure thing! JimmyJuicin - Glad to see you in competitions again, best of luck! Inweaver - Glad I'm challenging you, welcome to the competition!
Peter_W. Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 I need to keep honing up my chops for lessons coming up in August. Count me in. Celebration? I'm a trumpet player, a quarter of my repertoire fits that bill. Should be a snap.
impresario Posted July 2, 2010 Author Posted July 2, 2010 As long as it's not something you have previously started, that's fine peter. Or are you referring to music you've played as opposed to composed? Everyone this is IMPORTANT! Instead of a score category, I made a technical category. The description is changed in the original post, but here it is again: Technical will include a wide variety of things such as use of the ensemble, how playable it is, instrumentation, orchestration, use of dynamics and articulations, and score neatness. So you will still get a 0 in this aspect if you do not include a score. If anyone has any complaints, concerns, questions or comments (or praise :D ) feel free to speak.
Peter_W. Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 As long as it's not something you have previously started, that's fine peter. Or are you referring to music you've played as opposed to composed? Yeah, I meant my trumpet repertoire for performance. ;)
HeckelphoneNYC Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 I was reading through this and thought "Oh boy, I just wrote the perfect piece for this!!" Then I saw that it has to be written just for this competition :P Oh well, I'm still in as a competitor. :)
impresario Posted July 4, 2010 Author Posted July 4, 2010 Can I enter this? Or are there only 5 spots? The five spots is for judges - the more competitors the merrier! Sure you can join, as with Heklaphone45.
MusicFiend Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Okay, I'll try and do it... I've got an idea in mind that just might work....
impresario Posted July 9, 2010 Author Posted July 9, 2010 Added you all, glad to see lots of participation! Also, I added a deadline: July 31st at your midnight.
