This type of music to me can be the most evocative of traditional formats; I love it because it has the somberness and emotion of an elegies and the passion of an appassionata.

What makes for a good nocturne? Piano or otherwise.

Thanks!

I think a good nocturne should give the sense of tranquility and flood the listener with the own feelings of the night. To give an example: For me a good nocturne would be the Opus 9 no. 1 of Chopin, which manages to convey a kind of dark tranquility, while the Opus 9 no. 2 is more like a romantic song.

Another good example of what should be a nocturne for mi would be the so called "Night Music" by Bartok.

Greetings.
