Tokkemon Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Very fascinating article about Aliens and Bach. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/08/15/aliens-exist-probably-love-bach/ My favorite line is: "If we could ask only one question, I think maybe not 'Do you have religion?' but, 'Do you have music?'" would be best, said SETI senior astronomer Seth Shostak. xrsbit Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Certainly the rules of mathematics would apply anywhere in this universe. Aliens (If they exist) are simmilar to us in that they evolved under the same rules that govern this universe as we did. They also must have had to experience the same laws of the universe as us. I think the axioms of their mathematics not contradict ours. And if aliens one day meet us, I hope like scraggy that they appreciate our art, or there will be nothing stopping them from annhilating us or using us as guinea pigs for their experiments. Or, at least, our art will give them one reason not to kill us all. Quote
keysguitar Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 If aliens exist, they will love quarter tone music. =D 1 Quote
PhantomOftheOpera Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Heh... we musicians will be the ambassadors of human species :) 1 Quote
charliep123 Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Aliens wouldn't "love Bach", they'd most likely hate him. Just like African tribes hate Beethoven. If we're talking mathematics, aliens would be more inclined to like Boulez than Bach. 1 Quote
jrcramer Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 I think what they will or will not like is largely depending on the shape of their ears, and since we don't know that this discussion is point-less (unless you're Vulcan) Quote
last life Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Star trek is pretty great. Maybe we should send the aliens that. 1 Quote
Andy1044 Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 It's ok, we'll just hire John Williams to communicate with them. He's done it once before. Quote
HeckelphoneNYC Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Bach played on theramin? :phones: 2 Quote
jookyle Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 I hate Bach. He's boring. I wrote a paper in my first semester of a music history in which I said, "Bach was a hack". Quote
Quaser Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Oh man, pretty much any music that's been based heavily in math would probably be fairly entertaining to an alien race. Granted, they could be tone-deaf as well and completely ignore us musicians, think us pointless, and turn us into cattle. ;_; You're clearly retarded. I lol'd. I'd say something about Bach not being a hack but it'd be redundant and pointless. Quote
last life Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 aliens would love math smart people love math math=advanced 1 Quote
cschweitzer Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I hate Bach. He's boring. I wrote a paper in my first semester of a music history in which I said, "Bach was a hack". I would like to read this paper. I can tell you now-- you're wrong! ;)-- but it would be interesting to read. 1 Quote
keysguitar Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Music can be based on math in many diffrent ways... Hey, anything can be described using math, it dosen't make it inherintley mathmatical. Quote
Alex Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Why is it that we always assume aliens are technologically advanced? :o They could be cavemen for all we know. :P Even so, they would probably love Bach. At least, some type of music. If they didn't, they would probably love to discover it. Everyone needs music. :w00t: Quote
Kamen Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Aliens do exist. The question is only if they'll love Bach. Quote
last life Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 This math is.... ... ...so beautiful! Quote

Good point there :) Music is intended to influences the spiritual constituent, not mind. So if the aliens have it at all - they would definitely be touched by Bach.) P.S. Lol'd at this part: "What about Lady Gaga?" a member of the audience asked, referring to the American pop singer. "I won't even go there," Schwob replied. Quote
