CMC: Conceptual Music Competition

abadoss-CMC.png

This competition is based on the rules of the classic TOMC (Thematic Original Music Competition).

The CMC (Conceptual Music Competition) is designed so that each participant enters a piece of music based on a set theme. The participants take the theme and interpret it as they will to come up with something that fits. Any style can work, as long as it portrays a sense of what the theme is.

Feel free to be imaginative!

Each successive theme will be chosen by the winner of the previous competition. For example, say the theme of the last competition, CMC 38, was "Blackout" and the winner, Kelly, submitted a piece that knocked the socks off of everyone, so she won. Kelly then gets to decide the theme for CMC 39.

This competition is open to registered members of the forums of

OverClocked ReMix, VGMusic, Gaming World, Young Composers, and GameDev.

Results!:

There are 7 entries for this round...

snake5 - "Another Place, No More Time"

  • "A man goes on a journey, he finds the forces of nature too powerful and he almost dies but he sees that there's the house he was looking for so he gathers all the strength he still has and goes towards the house..."

Rich Douglas - "First Voyage"
  • "This piece follows the children as they assemble, and take their first voyage, on the craft which will transport them to the mystical city in order to (hopefully) find the answers they seek.
This piece was mainly done with a slew of custom samples... I did however utilize Omnisphere for the synth, and Battery for the drums. Enjoy!"

Lars Dobbertin-King - "Into the Fog"

  • "Sailing on life's misty railroad, where just one wrong turn sends us to a watery grave, people tend to dream of other places and times without such bounds - a mighty glorious kingdom. We will do almost anything to get there, if it is there. Yet life must go on. This piece is about the contrast between our lofty ideal of the unexpected and the harsh reality of existence in this age of the mundane."

SkyLynx - "Beyond"
  • "This piece is about getting beyond, beyond horizon, beyond reality, beyond the unreachable distant plans, where the ultimate answer awaits. Or ultimate dream, or whatever is important. It's an epic quest, personal quest to find strength inside yourself to make the first step... and continue your way, the way that is not clear at all."

Joshua Taylor - "Sorry to See You Go"

  • No description given.

Chris Spencer and Tom Prather - "Travel is a Breeze"
  • No description given.

The J - "The Boy and the Amulet"

  • "The boy sat out with his friends, with a heavy heart he knew he was the only chance for his mother to live. he held the amulet in one hand and tried not to look scared. his party was now entering the parallel world. as they were passing in they couldn't miss the beautiful landscapes and different skies, everything about that place said there was magic involved. they traveled some more, a distant cry was heard and an ominous feeling enveloped the young group, it was time to deal with reality."

Voting Rules!:
  • Voters will be allowed to pick one first place (3 points) and any number of honorary mentions (1 point). Only one set of votes from any one voter will be accepted and a person cannot vote for any one piece more than once. Corrections to votes, from the original voter only, will be accepted, but corrections will void the previous votes. Basically, a voter can vote and correct the vote, but only the final form of that vote will be counted. Send all votes to
Abadoss by PM. Please include any and all constructive critiques (not to be confused with bashing) about them with your votes as well, so that there's always a sense of growth in the artform. If you wish to remain anonymous, just state so in your PM. Thanks.

  • To be eligible to vote, you must be a registered member of at least one of the participating forums, prior to the beginning of the voting period. In your PM or e-mail, please indicate which forum you are a member of and your username.

  • The voting period will last from the moment the entries are posted in the thread to the Saturday of that week. The voting period for this round ends October 9, so be sure to spend some time really listening to the pieces.

  • Any participant in the competition can vote, but not for their own pieces. However, in an effort to encourage voting among participants, any participant who votes will have 2 points added to his/her voting score (unless the participant chooses to be anonymous).

Official Rules!:
  1. Each piece must be originally composed for this competition. Arrangements and remixes will not be accepted. (Pieces composed by the participant prior to the competition will not be accepted.)
  2. Each piece must be 2:00 or longer and match the competition theme.
  3. Only one entry per person. Collaborations will be allowed, but each collaborator may not submit any other pieces. (This also means that a person cannot collaborate on two or more different pieces at the same time.)
  4. A link to the entry piece must be e-mailed or PMed to Abadoss prior to the deadline set for each competition. DO NOT POST THE LINK IN THE THREAD!
  5. Important: Each file must be labeled accordingly: Composer_Name_-_Composition_Title_CMC#.mp3
(For example, if Alice Gerber submits a piece called "Just Judging" to CMC 37, then her filename would be: Alice_Gerber_-_Just_Judging_CMC37.mp3)
  6. MP3 file format is required. Know that even OGG will need to be converted into MP3. (If someone is unable to do so themselves, Abadoss would be willing and able to do it for them.)
  7. Entries should be accompanied by a description and/or story to help listeners understand what the piece is about. (Not required, though.)
  8. All entries must be submitted by Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 11:59 PM - PST, GMT-8.

I'd love to enter but I don't understand one thing:

Is "Another Place, Another Time" being the theme the only rule? Nothing else?

There's a link to a picture that the theme is based around. This is only the second time we've tried this, so it's understandable that you might have missed that part. Let me know if it doesn't load, though.

Not to be rude or condescending or anything, but you are like the "NOW this is what I call music" series with these competitions. You just keep going. I guess there is nothing wrong with that though. I figure there might be a Conceptual Music Competition number 200 some day.

It took me a minute to figure out what you were saying with the emphasis on "now" instead of "this", as I assume it to be. That said, I think CMC 200 is a little rosy of an outlook. These competition take a lot of work to maintain. I would love to make it to 200, but participation is going to have to seriously pick up on all, five now, boards on a consistant basis for me to feel motivated enough to keep doing it that long. However, at this time, I have no intention of stopping any time soon.

solid advertisement, and pretty legit since he is the one doing all the legwork getting the people together, through these threads, then its getting all the mp3 and dealing with people, then its posting this, voting..its pretty much a days work-and he's doing it for free, so i think its pretty decent of him. i didn't see any claims for this competition to be artistic in the purest nature or anything like that, its mostly for fun and exercise.

its great for beginning composers and also for veterans since its always a challenge to hit the right spot.

All entries are in and have been posted! Time to vote!

Seriously, though, the quality of the pieces this time around is phenomenal! Good job you guys! :D

I mostly agree with reviews of my piece. But in my defense I want to say that I had very little time to work on it to make structure more clear.
