thedoublebassist Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Hi. My name is Chris, and I'm new here. I have been teaching myself music theory by myself with the text book, Tonal Harmony 5th ed. I find music theory fascinating, and enjoy learning about it. For some time, I have realized that without having the cds to listen to the audio examples, I am missinhg out on alot of information. The fifth edition is no longer being printed and I can't find used cd's anywhere. I don't know where I can find answers to my questions, so I thought I'd try here since some of you may have this book. 1. Does anyone know where I can find cd's for the fifth edition? 2. How different is the 6th edition from the 5th edition? Would the 6th edition cd's work with the 5th edition textbook? 3. Does anyone know where I can find some answers. I've contacted the publisher and couldn't get any answers. I'd really appreciate any serious help at all. Thanks. Quote
MADstudios Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 It would be better if you could supply us with the name of the author of the book. Nevertheless, a good way to start searching is www.amazon.com. Maybe, there´s a tracklist there for the cd´s, and you could compare them to the examples in your edition. Quote
Kamen Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Perhaps, this is the Kostka & Payne book? I haven't seen this book, but I don't think it's the best choice for self-taught people, I think there are some books which are better explanation-wise. As far as I have read, this one looks at harmony in a too vertical way and doesn't pay enough attention to the horizontal dimension and voice leading. As for the CDs... Come on, what about people in the past? They didn't have any CDs or tapes, only books, but they knew their stuff and survived! Quote
thedoublebassist Posted October 22, 2010 Author Posted October 22, 2010 Yes. It is the Kostka/Payne book. ...and my keyboard skills aren't good enough to play the examples in the book on my own. If they were. I wouldn't need the cds. Quote
