composerorganist Posted October 24, 2010 Posted October 24, 2010 I'd thought Id start this to get people to explore areas of composer's works not well known or under exposed because the composer was well-known for a certain style. My first piece is by Copland when he came late to serial music. I am not a big Copland fan really - although he had his own voice, it still sounds sometimes to me a little on the pastiche side in some works as well as owing significantly to Stravinsky. So here I post Copland's Inscapes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TVBO5BjMs8&p=D95420DE6A19DB62&playnext=1&index=10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quYElrvErkE&p=D95420DE6A19DB62&index=12&playnext=2 Now let's compare to Copland's Americana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqah1rucyRg&feature=related The one line that runs through both pieces is the adeptness with motivic transformations and well hidden rhythmic complexity, plus some great moments of orchestration. Max Castillo Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 He should've sticked to Americana. 1 Quote
charliep123 Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Speaking of serialism and Stravinsky, how about his serial works? Requiem Canticles anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=668QWMK-maQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxcEe2F1qEg&feature=related Quote
composerorganist Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 Great piece and you are right - everyone writes about how great the piece is but it is hardly heard! Could be it is a bear to perform - I saw a portion of the score, and the rhythms are extremely difficult to get. Quote
Nirvana69 Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 He should've sticked to Americana. No. Quote
composerorganist Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 Ok, enough about Copland --- any other examples of undervalued works or periods from an established composer's oeuvre? Quote
