Peter_W. Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 So I've got two piano pieces which at the prodding of my comp instructor I will be printing into bindable, professional format. That's gonna be fun to figure out how to do. x_x Anyway, what I need are some tips on page turns. Some general tips of what we should expect pianists to do and also some specifics on these two attached pieces (one of which a prior edition is uploaded, the other of which is forthcoming). I have no idea what constitutes a good and bad page turn. I would think ANY page turning is undesireable, but there's not much you can do about having to go more than two pages. Thanks! Elizabeth Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 Ok. From looking at your first piece here, I'll show you examples of AMAZING page turns: End of page 4/Beginning of page 5 and end of 6/beginning of 7 (bump up measure 98 to pg 5). Both of these provide the pianist with a few measures rest in one hand, giving the opportunity to turn the page. Another thing I always look for when playing is a long sustained note or longer repeated notes (see ms. 16-17) (ms. 32-33) (ms 80 in right hand) (ms 112-113). For the most part you have decent page turns, but I'd possibly look at the following turns (none of your turns are impossible, but some pianists might have trouble with these): pgs 3-4, 5-6, 8-9, 9-10, possibly 10-11, and 11-12. Most of these could be fixed by shifting your measures one way or the other. However, if you don't fix them, that's alright too---that's why pianists practice :). Again, nothing I see here would be impossible to do (notes might get dropped). Your second piece, however, looks much more difficult to turn in places. Pg 1-2, 4-5, 6-7, and 8-9 are alright (depending on the tempo), but the rest are really hard...the pianist would have to drop notes alot in order to play them. It all depends on how you're going to print out the pages Quote
Mirchada Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 well if you can't afford this.. this one could be a solution ... a part from developing your personal technique in turning pages faster(or memorizing the last part of your sheets.. ) an electronic solution is recommended .. even a laptop or a Ipad will do the trick (of course with an appropriate pedal.. or a perfect timing technique ... ) Quote

Unfortunately, useless tips for composers. :P Quote
Peter_W. Posted November 14, 2010 Author Posted November 14, 2010 I love PrimoPDF. How's this? I could NOT figure out how to make the last few turns on the first piece to get any nicer than that. =/ Everything else seems pretty good to me. Elizabeth Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Yes- the first one looks really good! All the turns are either very nice/easy to accomplish, or (in the case of the last one) can be done with a little practice. The 2nd one looks good too. I only have one concern- the turn between 7 and 8 looks really hard still. I'd recommend bumping ms. 60 to the next page. This way the right hand can hit the half note and quickly turn the page before the next set of runs. Quote
jrcramer Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 In the prelude some accidentals seem to be spaced oddly. ms 60 and its copy 69. If you are going to print these, you should fix that :D I also would try to fix the fermata and slur collision in ms 82, and the last quarter of 83 looks a bit strange too Pageturns look nice, though Fantasia looks fine too Quote
