ChsBt0ne Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 See, here's the thing. For English, we're doing a project on Lord of the Flies, and my group is doing a mock movie trailer, which we will film with the school's cameras. So, having a basic knowledge of how to compose music, I thought, "Hey, I could see if I can score the trailer". And I decide I would like to use a conch in the score. So here's my predicament: The mp3 file from Finale is the closest to being performed it will ever get. There is no "conch" sound in the MIDI libraries. So, what would you suggest I use to imitate the sound of a conch? Quote
SYS65 Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 by "conch" you mean something like what this dancer is blowing ? The only work I know that use them is "Revueltas - Noche de los Mayas" and revueltas call directly for these "conchs" (caracoles) , no substitute, I recently finished a work about these dancers, but I didn't call for these conchs because I don't know how hard to find are they, if you think are easy to find, you could call directly for those (clearly specifying in the score), if not, don't worry, the sound of these things can be emulated with a Horn, or a Tuba, perhaps an Euphonium, the point is to write an static large note. Listen carefully at 1:02, that's the sound of the conch, you'll see if easy to emulate... EDIT: Ups, by finding the picture I forgot you said MIDI.... like I said, Tuba sound may work. Quote

No, it can't. Those are all horrible substitutes. OP, any "natural" bugle will suffice. Like a shofar or ram's horn trumpet or the like. You may be able to find a sound of those. Quote
SYS65 Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Well I think Shofar and that "ram's horn" are not easy to find, (I tell you because I have never seen one) and I said Tuba because I was thinking in very common instruments Quote
Peter_W. Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Rams horn and shofar are far more common for musicians to own than conches. French horn would be the closest substitution, but a midi definitely wouldn't get you anywhere close and the french horn player would have to be Pretty good to make it sound rIght. Quote

I think he is only worried about a Recording, (that's his current problem) with not to use a simple wav sample, if he can use libraries he surely can use a single wav file. I will try to create one.... EDIT: I made one based on how it sounds in the video above, I could make this, I might try to improve the sample later... http://www.box.net/shared/93vlkya7q7 Quote
