There Will Be Rest

Hi, Guys!! I'm new here, but i found this thread because I was search for a virtual choir to perform a piece that I just wrote for My Fiancée, My Love. The text is "There Will be Rest" by Sara Teasdale.

Also I used Sibelius 6 to write it with, so I can create .wav file of each individual part to help everyone learn the piece. In addition, I think the way to synchronize everyone in recording the performance is for everyone to follow the same video file of a conductor conducting the piece. I can conduct pretty decently and would be happy to provide a video on me conducting the piece.

I hope you don't mind- I gave you your own thread so your choir doesn't get mixed up with someone elses. Also, count me in as a female voice (either soprano or alto...doesn't matter).

Upload a video of you conducting, and I also think split audio files would be a good idea.

I don't have a good voice at all, but I can sight-sing, and will help out with a few parts if the response isn't overwhelming.

Thanks, prestidigilicious! Thanks for both taking an interest in helping this piece get performed and for your feedback about the piece itself. It's definitely not Career Defining Work (in wrote it in about an hour and a half), But its for someone I deeply LOVE and it is, therefore, special to me.

Thank you too, Danny and jesusfreak1277, for your involvement and help. I am still working on the conducting video. I'm having one of my dear friends, who is a professional conductor, do the actually conducting. He is much better than I, in that arena, and he also has a knack for bringing out things is choral songs that even I didn't realize were there.

I, myself, am a lyric baritone. So, I can do most of the bass lines. All we need is an alto. I was thinking that, if we don't get a lot of singer that want to be involved, we can simple create a full sounding choir by recording our vocal lines several times. Everytime that we each record our parts, we could use varying degrees of lighter and heavy sound to our voices, thereby creating the slight micro-tonal variations that you would hear in a full choir.

What do you guys think?

I can quite comfortably sing all the female parts. I've got a wide range.

Would be happy to sing the soprano part(s), could have a go at the alto, stays in the low range a little too much for where my voice sits, but I'm sure it would be fine :)

Ok, so, thus far we have Sofie on soprano, Elizabeth (jesusfreak1277) on soprano & alto, Danny & prestidigilicious on the men's parts (I'm not sure what range though, please tell). William (pianoman216) has also agreed to help out and I can sing baritone & most of the 2nd tenor lines. 6 singers so far, in just a few days; if this keeps up, we will have a full choir in no time.

I also, I was thinking that it might be possible to record the parts and real time performance dynamics with vocaloid. That way we can all have "someone" singing the lines with us so that we can follow. I have vocaloid, but am not to proficient as using and programming it. Anyone who reads this thread and would like to help out with the performance in that way, please let me know.

Absolutely, Sofie. I, myself, would love to take advantage of this new medium for several things I'm working on. And I'm sure others feel the same way.

Ok, guys. I am going to be uploading the conducting video for There Will Be Rest. Also, I will be uploading a rehearsal video, first. That way I will be able to give everyone an idea for how I will be conducting the piece and be able to give some performance notes about certain sections of the composition in advance.

BTW, I am going to be creating the virtual choir youtube channel. But first, I need to know what you guys want to call this virtual choir. Please post your ideas here.

Well, you know I'm in. I can sing bass 1 through alto 2 (somtimes down to bass 2 and up to alto 1, just not on the same days :) ). I'll sing all the parts I can.

Which parts do you want me to sing? All female? And do you want them to have video or not?

Actually, I do very much need someone to sing the bass 2 part (I'm a high lyric baritone, so I don't have those low bass note "E's"). I would also appreciate it if, you could help out with bass 1 as well.

As for everyone else here, first of all, I do appreciate the warm response and enthusiasum. I really would mean a lot to my fiancee to be able to hear the full performance of the piece. As far as what parts each of you should sing, sing as many of them as you feel you are capable of singing comfortably. recording of each part via video and audio is preferred, but not absolutely necessary if you don't have access to equipment to do so. I will post the conducting video soon. I will record it to the music as I hear it in my head and then overlay a piano on top of it so that you can follow what I'm doing.

As am I. Once I get the Conducting track to you all, (although there is no official deadline, persay) I would appreciate the individual recordings as soon as is possible without causing undo disruption to your schedules. It will take me a little while to adequately mix and sync all the tracks together. In addition, in order to achieve the "requisite variety" of sound color that you would hear from a real live large choral ensemble, (due to the extremely small size of our group) I am asking and would appreciate it if each person could record several tracks per part; In each track, experimenting with different colors of sound to the voice ( e.i. brighter, darker, lighter, heavier, etc.)

Ok, everyone! Good News! I was able to re-engineer the demo full choir audio that you have all heard into a Live Performance tempo! (Thank u very much, Acid MUSIC STudio 8.0)

So, that means that we now have a recording that we sing to as we record ourselves singing the different parts!!! So now its up to all of you to make the SATB part recordings. Record them and send them ton me as soon as possible and I will get to work on mixing them. I will provide an email address to send the recordings to at the bottom of this post. If the files are too big to send, go ahead compress them and send in a .zip or .rar archive file. I'll download uncompress them on my computer and mix them.

Do you want video or just mp3 recordings?? I can do both, but I don't want to waste time doing one if I don't need to. And how many recordings of each part do you want? (You stated you wanted us to record more than one).

Hi, Elizabeth! Thank you for your question, I did forget to clarify. For now, mp3 is fine. It's easier to mix the mp3 tracks together. We can also dub in a video later. As for the number of recordings each, I would that two to three per part is sufficient. Just remember that each track should be recorded with a different vocal color or timbre, so feel free to experiment with wide ranges of sound color. For example, in one recording you might use a deeper, darker sound and on another, use light, airy, ethereal voice. On one, heavier vibrato; On another, more straight tone.
