There Will Be Rest

Hi, Guys!!! I have just a few performance notes for you as you are all working on the recordings. First, even with the live performance tempo audio track, would it be helpful, or do you guys still want a conducting video to sing to?

Second, beginning at measure 1 during the soprano's entrance of 'there will be rest" the altos may sing with them on their part and then jump back to their own part for their entrance.

3. at measure 1 for the bass entrance: basses, I have decided to start the line on an "A (natural)" with the tenors rather than on the "F(#)" that is written.

4. altos, also, start on an "F(#)" rather than the "B(natural)" that is written.

5. For Everyone: On measure 4, on the words "shining". As you land on note/sylable of the word, add a small Sforzando to it so that each note swells or 'pulses'. repeat this again on pg. 2, measure 16 on the word "shining"

6. On pg. 2, beginning on measure 14, 3th note: There is, as I am sure you can hear in the recording, a rapid change of tempo beginning here. If you movement is unclear to you, it may be helpful to think measure 14, notes 3, 4, and measure 15, note 1 as a triple. So if quarter note=(qn) and half note=(hn) the time equation is thus {1(qn) + 1(qn) + 1(qn) = 1(hn).

7. For everyone, on pg 2, measure 34 through pg. 3, measure 36: there is a slight ritardano beginning at 34 to 36, then an accelerando on measure 37.

8. For basses, at measure 34, 4th note: sing unison "C(#)" with the tenors rather than the "A(natural)" that is written.

9. For 2nd sopranos on pg 3, measures 39 & 46: enter on an "F(#)" rather on an "A(natural)" as written. So, your entrance will mirror or echo that of the 1st sopranos

10.For Basses, on pg. 3, measure 47: there is an optional, unwritten low "D(natural)", if any of you can sing that low, GO FOR IT!

11. For Altos, on measures 55-56: Ladies, I wrote for you as your moment to shine!! Don't be afraid to really BELT IT OUT!

12. For Everyone on pg 4, measures 58-59: I made an error in the text. The phrase is actually "IN my lonely mind.." not "INSIDE". Please sing correct version.

13. For sopranos on pg. 5, measure 82, 1st note: sing "D(#) --> B(natural)" rather than the "B(natural) --> B(natural)" that is written. repeat this at measure 90 as well.

14. For Altos, Tenors, and Basses on pg 6, measures 98 through 102: Although the foot note is obscured and ended up on the previous page, remember that on the word "Rest" each time a couple of voices from each section will speak the words in rythnm with a whisper tone (just air thru the mouth) and, on each repeat more voices will switch to whisper tone instead of "Singing" the note.

15. Finally, on the last measure of the score: I want to slowly fade out the chord into just whisper tone. It is a really neat effect! So, would you all kindly add an addition recording with the last note held in just whisper tone, so that I can fade out the final chord to a whisper. (note: please be sure to clearly enunciate the final consonant of "st" even through you are whispering, I still want the cut off to be clean)

Well, Guys!! That's It! I look forward to hearing each one of your recordings and to mixing together the final performance!!!

Just update the score and parts.

Thank you, Daniel. Yes, I will. I just wanted to give the notes for anyone that might have already begun recording.

Also, Good New GUYS!! we now have several members of classicalsingers.net on board to submit recordings and the Portara Ensemble Choir in nashville, TN. So, hopefully,we will get a good mix of singers. Also, the Director and Conductor of the Portara Ensemble has graciously agreed to upload a conducting track for everyone to follow. I will keep everyone posted on that as well.

Hi neuro!

I'm afraid I don't quite have the voice nor the materials (camera+ microphone) to help you with this project, but I just wanted to add that Frank Ticheli (a well-known composer for concert band who has branched out a little) actually wrote a choral piece (and band reduction) on this same poem!! Granted, I'm sure they're very different from each other, but I found it intriguing that you wrote one too. Best wishes to all of you, this will be great!

Hi, Nabby!! Thanx for posting! Actually, yes, I am aware of Frank ticheli's setting of this poem. In fact, when I was still singing with professional choral groups, we performed and I sang it several times. It was thru sing the song that I first discover this gorgeous text.
