Billy Bragg's Beethoven

Recommended Posts

So I may be late on this, but I recently found out that there was a "translated" version of the choral movement of Beethoven's Ninth made and performed. I guess the LSO (London Symphony Orchestra) commissioned Billy Bragg to do the "translating". It's not a literal translation, but more contextual; the original message is still present, that of brotherly love and world unity, but it's not described exactly the same way as the original German version.

THIS is the only recording I could find of it.

It's not a very good recording of it, the sound is kind distorted and not equalized well. (If anyone knows of a better one, please share :D) But anyways I wanted to know of anyone else's opinion on this version of it? Personally I feel it doesn't hold the same power; I'm no linguist, but I feel like something about the sounds in the German language help to get the "primal" emotions across, more because of the actual sound of the words rather than their meaning. My reasoning is that I can't understand much German, so the first thing that stuck out to me when I watched that video was that the "sounds"/pronunciations didn't match, rather than literal meaning. I feel like it's good in its own right, but not an improvement, and for me it doesn't connect emotionally.

What do you think?
