johannhowitzer Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Wow, don't ask me to pick just one. For those of you who might think me an uncultured homeschooler, this might prove you right; then again, it might surprise you. In no particular order, just as I thought of them: "Within Reach" by The Remnant "Love at the Speed of Light" by Avalon "Run" by Collective Soul "Get Down" by Audio Adrenaline "Boy on a String" by Jars of Clay "Comfort Eagle" by Cake "I L-O-V-E You" by Take 6 "Inaudible Melodies" by Jack Johnson "Word Disassociation" by Lemon Demon "Only Hope" by Mandy Moore "Money" by Pink Floyd "Experimental Film" by They Might Be Giants "Beautiful Place" by Urban Blight "The Mountain" by Steven Curtis Chapman "It's Love" by King's X LOTS more I couldn't think of at the moment, too! Notice no two songs here are by the same band. I have wide tastes, and don't really buy CDs since most CDs only have one or two songs I like on them. Has anybody here ever heard of The Remnant, Take 6, Urban Blight, or King's X? If you have and you're under 20, I'm very impressed. Quote
Lord Sorasen Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 I've heard OF them, howitzer, though their music I haven't really heard :(. Quote

Get down is one of my favorite songs as well. several others that you have listed also. I LOVE "Die Shoenen Mulleren" the 20 song set by Schubert! I've heard King's X... not a big fan though. Quote
Micus Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Instead of listing countless disorganized songs, I've named my number one favorite song in each of the six categories of music I listen to most. Classical - Danse Macabre (Saint-Sa Quote
Monkeysinfezzes Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 I'll do the same: Classical: Homeward Bound, forget the composer. Jazz: A lot, but the first that comes to mind is "Saturday Night Fish Fry." Hilarious. Musical: Man of La Mancha's "I Don Quixote." All time favorite song: American Pie... By Don McLean. That song is the crown jewel of the New Great American Songbook - 1950s and above. I've never heard a song that just hit me on so many layers ats that. Brilliant lyrics. It's almost like the closest you can get to fine art in pop music. Quote
giselle Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 hmmmmmmmmm, besides classical?? I dunno. Maybe: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: The 17-Year Cicada or Gunday's Child. or Mary Lou Williams (from Mary Lou's Mass): "O.W." or "People in Trouble" or even "One" Actually, that whole last CD is in my top 5 CDs ever. Just Great. Quote
johannhowitzer Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Sleepytime Gorilla MuseumYou have GOT to be kidding. There's actually a band called that? I swear, bands these days make up strange names to get attention. What significance does this name have, anyway? :D Quote
giselle Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Well at least their name isn't just punctuation, like the band "!!!" :D I don't remember exactly what the deal is with the name, but one of their CDs is called "...of natural history" and a lot of the music takes on that theme. edit: (I was just reminded that here we always make up fake band names and their genres and song names. My dog has a band called "Ratsocket" that plays noice rock. There's also my fake band "The Rape Defense Posture" and there has been talk of the non-formulation of goth metal band "Unborn Skull") Quote
johannhowitzer Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 My parents are in a ministry under Campus Crusade called Keynote, which puts together touring bands. Part of training, I remember, was creating a band presentation for a fake band, and everyone had to invent their own band. I don't remember this one guy's names exactly, but it was something like his band's name was "Now Hiring" and the album was "Employee of the Month". He pulled it from a magazine clipping (the band presentations were all made from magazine clippings). Quote
giselle Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 I don't remember this one guy's names exactly, but it was something like his band's name was "Now Hiring" and the album was "Employee of the Month". hahaha! I actually really like that. :D Quote
Christopher Dunn-Rankin Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 hmmmmmmmmm, besides classical?? I dunno. Maybe: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: The 17-Year Cicada or Gunday's Child. One of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's founders went to Oberlin! Carla Kihlstedt studied composition there. The group visited last year, but I was unable to see them perform. Quote
giselle Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 One of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's founders went to Oberlin! Carla Kihlstedt studied composition there. The group visited last year, but I was unable to see them perform. Oh yeah? That's very cool. I wanted to go to one of their shows once but apparently my plain jane appearance would have me standing out in the crowd. I still wanted to go, but my only source of transportation wasn't that enthusiastic. Bah!!! Quote
Christopher Dunn-Rankin Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 My favorites: Classical (song): There Will Be Rest - Frank Ticheli Experimental Rock: Inertiatic ESP - The Mars Volta Pop/Rock: Ghost Train - Marc Cohn (another Oberlin graduate) Classic Rock: Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie Folk/Rock: What Do You Hear In These Sounds - Dar Williams Alternative Rock: The House Our Father Knew - Jump, Little Children Techno/Indie: Hide & Seek - Imogen Heap Musical Theatre/Rock: Midnight Radio - Hedwig and the Angry Inch Musical Theatre/Classical: Fable - The Light in the Piazza Musical Theatre/Other: How Glory Goes - Floyd Collins Quote
Lord Sorasen Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Ya, lots of bands have weird names, like SUPERCHINCHLLARESCUEMISSION. Quote
giselle Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 haha, yeah and we can't forget "Rapeman" and "14-year-old girls." ;) Quote
M_is_D Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Classical pieces are not songs. Dance Macabre, for example, isn't a song. My favorite song is Che Gelida Manina, Puccini's. Quote
