Hi Yc!

This is about intervals! Which are your favorites, and why?

For me, it's maj. 2nd, perfect 4ths and 5ths, major and minor 7ths, and major 9ths (which is really a 2nd now isn't it?) because I like that "open" sound they have.

Heckel

Augmented second (i.e. Eb to F#). I love the sound of it, it's a very rich sound - almost gypsy-ish in nature! Add it to the list!

I like that too. I like to call it a "harmonic 2nd." :)

As far as motion goes, I like the motion of a perfect 5th even better than that, though.

As far as block sonority, I like the major 9th and minor 2nd. Hard to decide.

So sorry Peter.... when I added aug. 2nd, it changed your votes :(

I like the Augmented 5th but that isn't there either. And yes, it is completely different to a minor 6th!!

(it's cool, Heckle)

It certainly is different. Functionally, a +5 is either a stable interval or tending UPward to resolve to a major 7th. A b6 tends downward in the manner of the minor mode.

In the same way, minor 3rd is stable while +2 is tending upward (or down :P)

But then again, if we were to be completely thorough, we'd have to include all of these:

unison

augmented unison (.5)

minor 2nd (.5)

major 2nd (1)

augmented 2nd (1.5)

diminished 3rd (1)

minor 3rd (1.5)

major 3rd (2)

augmented 3rd (2.5)

diminished 4th (2)

perfect 4th (2.5)

augmented 4th (3)

et freakin' cetera.

But since it's been nominated, may as well as the +6. *laughs*

Feel free to say:

"My favorite is an augmented 23rd!"

I don't have room for more, and when I add things, it changes all the votes

Sorry!

Major seconds, major thirds, and the tritones.

2nds and 7ths in general.

My favorite interval: the diminished 7th

M3 and M6 :)

I'm really into all of the diminished and dissonant ones, but what else I find really awesome is perfect fifths in the low octaves, especially those in octave '1'.

Ornstein frequently used minor 9ths in his early pieces, and people seldom use this interval, so I'll say that.

Since I first heard Varèse's Déserts I'm in deep love with major 9ths. I could do intimate things with them all day (and night) long!

I also like perfect 11ths and double-octaves.

Enharmonically, it might be a minor 10th, but the #9 is definitely my favorite chord extension.

Minor 9ths/major 7ths have a cragginess about them that's delicious to me.

My favorite intervals are the minor fifth, acute fifth, and nuetral second.

You really should have an 'other' option.

Augmented 4th/diminished 5th, augmented 5th, major 9th, augmented 11th. As you can probably tell, I tend to gravitate toward "jazz" harmonies, though my music doesn't really sound much at all like jazz; I just love the lush, misty tonal ambiguity that one can create with such harmonies.

i think you can check what's your favourite interval by just playing each interval in different pitches.

for me 9th are cheesy(message in a bottle) and 10th are like beatles/blackbird, but major 7th in different pitches sounds wicked-check out 7:42 where the guitarist plays major 7ths descending in whole tones, sounds awesome:

Minor 7th, fundamental to 4th and 6th overtone interval, slightly off unison.

I love upward leaps of a minor ninth. You can get a cool klangfarbenmelodie effect by giving each pitch to instruments with contrasting tone qualities.

I hate to ask, but what is an acute fifth and a neutral second?

The "other" option can be put up, but it generally changes all the votes, so I don't think I can do that.... but I can try

IF IT HAPPENS I AM VERY SORRY!!!

while you're at it, the minor fifth.

It's non-12tet stuff, Hekle.

*Heckel ;)

And I still don't know what that is.....

Minor 7th, fundamental to 4th and 6th overtone interval, slightly off unison.

can you explain that in english or notes please?

Both are a few cents off - the 6th overtone (or 7th harmonic) more than the 4th overtone (5th harmonic). I hope that is clear enough.
