siwi Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I am assuming that most people here have seen Disney's 1940 film Fantasia, which showed animated sequences over orchestral works performed by Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Possibly you have also seen the sequel, Fantasia 2000. Disney had intended the film to be a continuous project, with new sections alongside old favourites every time it was released (in this spirit, the Sorcerer's Apprentice segment was retained in Fantasia 2000). So my question is; what pieces would you like to include in a hypothetical new version of Fantasia. To make it realistic, pieces must be no more than about 20 minutes in duration (wonderful as it might be to animate a scenario for the whole of Strauss' Alpine Symphony, this would take up most of the film) although longer works may be abridged as happens with Stravinsky and Respighi in the two films. If you can think of ideas for animations as well it would be a bonus! Pieces already used are: Bach (attr.) orch. Stokowski: Toccata and Fugue in D minor Beethoven: Symphonies 5 and 6 Dukas: The Sorcerer's Apprentice Elgar: Pomp and Circumstance marches 1-4 Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue Mussorgsky: Night on a Bare Mountain Ponticelli: Dance of the Hours Respighi: The Pines of Rome (abridged) Saint-Saens: Carnival of the Animals (finale) Schubert: Ave Maria Shostakovich: Piano Concerto No.2 (1st mvt) Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring (abridged) and The Firebird (abridged) Tchaikovsky: Nutcracker Suite There was also a Debussy Clair de Lune sequence completed but never included in the film. My choices: Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man (procession sequence) Kodaly: Dances of Galanta, abridged (Hungarian folk tales/dances) Borodin: Polosvian Dances (large Russian dance sequence, possibly with animals) Mussorgksy, orch. Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition (excerpts) Holst: Mars/Saturn/Uranus/Neptune from The Planets (space exploration) Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra (excerpts) Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, mvts 4 and 5 Quote
