Shane Louis Myers Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Could anybody help me out with idea's on a composition for a short skydiving film, showcasing the worlds best skydivers. I have worked with skydivers and usually the music that is put to these clips is very cliche pop orientated. With discussions with the editor we where thinking of more of an orchestra type instrumentation, just finding myself stuck when trying to keep the piece upbeat, vibrant and enthralling without the dramatic feeling with certain instruments. Any Idea's. Quote
Ferkungamabooboo Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Stick with woodwinds and thinner textures at higher pitches. Stay major or augmented, taking advantages of the more playful dissonances (i love that 7dim7 chord in the major, personally, and find it to be simultaneously tense and undramatic). Speed isn't a big deal, and layering some slower functions might help keep direction. </braindump> Quote
Shane Louis Myers Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 Thank you for the advice. The diminshed idea is great. This may take sometime as I fairly new to this but hopefully i can upload as i go along to see what your thoughts are. Quote
Shane Louis Myers Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 What would you recommend to fill the lower frequency range out with. Would i get away with using a tympani along with the bassoon? Quote
Ferkungamabooboo Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 yeah that might work. A lighter (than mahler) dynamic might work for what they're doing, otherwise it could muddle things. All you can really get is general advice until you put some pen to paper. There should be some good film music guides somewhere around the site too. Check out Marius or Andy1044's posts (and other people who sound knowledgable) -- if it's not the same mood/genre you're looking for the general points will apply. good hunting. Quote
