composerorganist Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I hear much Ravel in this yet Schnittke makes it his own with some of the sulpont/microtonal inflections. Plus the concentration and layering of similar timbres makes it distinct from Ravel as well as some Ivesian touches (eg hidden arounf the 4:30 mark there is this entirely independent choral going on in the brass which slowly arises as the strings take part in it).
