Hello everyone, as I was making a post some minutes ago, I kinda missed a thread that discussed the music that is happening right now. So I wanted to try and kick off a thread doing just that, by making two simple rules.

1: The composer should in some sense fall under the normal idea of a classical, music composer. I'm gonna let this be broad, but keep it here to get rid of pop-rock etc.

2: The piece can not be more than 6 months old when posted.

I hope this will provide a lot of insight on what's going on in the contemporary scene. And of course I'm gonna start off with a piece:

Arnaud Korth - L'homme et la mer:

Really nice guy I met on reddit. He's studying at the conservatory in Quebec. I liked this piece because it's so full of atmosphere. Also I like the way he uses the instruments, it reminds me a lot of Crumb.

Yes, I agree with Phil... I mean I don't think I've written anything in the past six months, since I've been preoccupied with EMF, but I certainly have lots of stuff to share and so do other composers in EMF (and out of EMF as well... :P).

I completely agree with Nikolas and Phil (wait - did I just say I actually agree with Phil :horrified:???)...

Most of us have virtually zero chance to be aware of interesting music composed and premiered at the other side of the world during the last six months. Hey, where I live, a new work gets to be premiered like once or twice in a year, and I am not usually aware of it - let alone what is happening at premieres in North and South America, Australia, Europe, Asia or even Africa.

It would be actually much more helpful if this constraint was a bit more free. After all, it would give us a better chance to become aware of new music. I've asked quite often for recommendations on contemporary music by those who know it better, so this thread could be a powerful tool for that.

I think, though, he means performed work.

It's much easier at a college. haha. I have heard about 40 world premieres here at Jacobs in the past 6 months. So.. I mean. If I wanted to, I could list about 20 of those online right now (which I'll do later, don't have time right now).

I know that right now, there's a lot of you who have pieces on your mind, what are older than what I requested, but the point of this thread is not to go back in time and listen to "old" pieces, it's to have people who listen to new music, share with us other what they hear. My thought was that those who study at conservatories, or other schools, will attend concerts regularly with new music, assuming you're not the only one who studies composition. I know there's a lot of pieces you want to share, I have a lot as well, but what I wanted is a thread that will introduce me to entirely new music, from relatively unknown composers also, and to make sure the thread is not bombarded with recommendations, I set a very strict restriction, so only new music will be posted.

I think there's gonna be premieres at a festival I'm attending this summer, so that's one time to recommend new music (inspiration for where you'd find things to recommend)

http://www.ostimusic.com/DrumMusic.html a percussion concerto by John Mackey, came out 5 months ago(?) probably 6 but it's close enough! GREAT PIECE, and this isn't student type at all. There is A LOT of music out there if you look. I think you may want to extend it out to a year though, because John Mackey only put down 2011 in his score. I only know it came out 6 months ago because I stalk him like crazy and our marching band show was based on his music.

there's also this insane march my wind ensemble is doing.

notice the xylophone part at C and the tempo. I don't know how old it is, I just know it's very new

Cool, definitely gonna check that out.

For one source of very recent music try NewMusic Box' radio stream.

Link please :)

There's plenty of goodness on this page:

Looks interesting, but none of the uploads follow rule 2 :/

Written in the summer of 2011... Published by EMF.

I do hope to be able and produce more scores like this, with more elements than just the music (though I do think that score making is an art on its own).

When it comes to contemporary music, it really depends on what kind of music you want to hear for the contemporary. You may search on lists for this music and you can choose that really fits to your passion.
