For the second, less daunting competition, here is the April competition for you.

STILL aleatoric kinda... but not as much:

Meditation Competition

Contest will run from April 10th-30th.

Judging from May 1st-5th.

Results up by May 6th.

Premise: Composers will use the idea of "meditation" to come up with a piece of music that represents that thought. Composers will not be writing "music that people can meditate to". Composers will be trying to represent the idea of quiet thought and minimal distraction to come up with a piece that is meditative. FOR ideas: Listen:

Specifics:

There are none. As long as you use 5 instruments or less, as long as you compose following the vague guidelines above, you have a lot of compositional freedom. You may write in a "classical" or even atonal style. But, you will be judged on feeling as well as the music itself.

Judging:

/20 - Is it "meditative"? Are there minimal ideas that carry an almost minimalistic idea?

/30 - Does your score reflect the serene environment that is meditation? Don't use a lot of clutter and have a lot of white space. Trust me, it makes a difference in the performer.

/20 - Are you using less than 5 instruments and a GOOD combination of instruments? Unusual instrumentation will be awarded providing it works well. Also, solo instruments may be used. The solo flute piece is a good example. Do you stay in the time limit of 5 minutes (unless you petition that your piece is minimalist and it requires time to develop, in which case a 10 minute time limit is allowed).

/10 - Creativity. Don't write something you've heard before. Explore new sounds. A whole piece on violin harmonics would be a good place to start. Maybe a string quartet with all pizz and harmonics.

/10 - audio presentation. Is your midi prepared to lull the listener. Can they feel the music? You may choose to render a live recording or a sampled recording, know that you will be judged HARDER if you do. If you do a live recording, make sure it accurately reflects the score.

/10 - Simplicity. Finally, do not attempt to make a really complicated piece. Meditation is not like that. Meditation is flowing and "truth" seeking.

I'm interested - but don't count me in just yet, I'm through a rough patch and probably will have some problems writing a piece for the contest. I'll let you know if I'm finally in.

Remember, Austenite. If you do happen to have just one idea, this is the contest that works for people with little time. One idea that's meditative for a long time is good. It just has to be a good idea.

The nice part about making a meditative work is that it can be that "enlightened" simplicity. A small idea that says so much.

I am glad you're interested.

I'm in on this one too! I've been pretty bored with composition lately, so hopefully these two competitions can pump me up a little :D

I would like to participate but the idea of "meditation" seems hard to judge... :/

Perhaps I need further clarification? Otherwise I'll enter....But I'm not going to be surprised if I get marked down a for it not meeting someones expectation of meditative or whatever.

I'm interested, but I don't know if I'll have the time to finish anything (especially since I'm the slowest composer on the planet). Is there a deadline for saying yea or nay?
