Mirior Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 I've attached an 11-page score for oboe, clarinet in Bb, and bassoon, and I'd appreciate it if someone knowledgeable about those instruments could look at what I've written and tell me if there are any playability/notation issues. The clarinet part is untransposed; I'll be sure to transpose it in the final draft, don't worry. Thank you! somebody dropped the bomb.pdf PDF somebody dropped the bomb Quote
SYS65 Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 it doesn't look too bad, just for instance in m.7 in oboe, low Bb doesn't come out in p, you have to blow more, at least a short attack in f, in that particular segment it maybe will sound short in p, or maybe not, player will do it louder. things like m.106 in bassoon, (I'm not sure I don't play it) but lowest notes are played with the pinky finger, 100BMP is not too fast, but could be a problem there. the rest looks ok to me. Mirior Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 Thanks for responding! I have a question about the oboe; what is the lowest pitch that can be played with a soft attack? Quote
SYS65 Posted May 26, 2012 Posted May 26, 2012 I don't play oboe but is about the same issue in Soprano Sax. I'd say D is possible even in ppp, C begins to be powerful but can be controlled, B and Bb are the problematic ones, some players can do some tricks like hiding the Oboe bell with their knees, it decreases the loudness, it also depends on the passage, or the attack. A very soft B or Bb possible requires an embouchure change, so if you write a fast F,E,D,C,B,Bb all in pp, last Bb will be hard to produce with the previous notes there, Oboist will simply do a cresc to make that Bb heard. If the case is that player has all the time to set embouchure or whatever needs to be adjusted, maybe a ppp Bb is possible, even reeds affect, I can control the Bb in SopSax with a harder read, but highest notes are almost impossible, if I use a thin one, I can go high but don't ask me to play the low Bb or it will sound like trombone. just think in B and Bb as non easy pp or ppp, the rest is fine.
