Morivou Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Romantic Style Competition Contest will run from June 5th-30th. Judging from July 1st-5th. Results up by July 6th. Premise: Composers will create a Romantic Piece of music based on a musical motif (to be provided by June 5th at Midnight beginning the day). They will be allowed to use piano and four other instruments total. You do not have to use the extra four instruments if you do not want to, but keep in mind that Orchestration is part of the scoring. So, a piano solo will receive few points. BUT, the more instruments, the more chances you'll have at getting points off too. So, be courageous yet smart about your instrument choices. Keep in mind the instruments MOST USED in that time. Keep to the harmonic language of the time. This is an imitative exercise. We aren't going for New Music. However, do not let that keep you from being creative. Your melodies (in addition to the one provided) and rhythms can be outrageous. At this time, emotion was the goal. Heartbreak and Ecstasy were inspiration. Dramatics are suggested. Please keep in mind the 5 minute time limit always put on Competition pieces. Other than that, you are free to do as you like. :) Judging: Pre-requisite: Does the piece use the melody in some way? If not, the piece will not be judged. /22.5 Orchestration: Does the piece use more than one instrument? Is it a good combination? Does the composer use the instruments strengths in writing for them? Are the instruments used in Romantic Period music? /30 Stylistic Adherence: Does the piece use the melodic, harmonic, and form conventions of the day? Does the title reflect a Romantic Piece? /22.5 Development: Does the piece go somewhere? In the previous competition, development was discouraged. In the Romantic period, development was still a trend carried over from the classical era. Are there CONTRASTING SECTIONS? Is there a beginning, middle, and end? /10 Creativity: Romantic pieces were known for being innovative in their time. Since you are limiting yourself, still, you will have to think outside of the box but staying in the box's parameters. Be cautious that you do not fall into the trap of plagiarism. If you're found to have done this, even subconsciously, your piece will be disqualified. Also, do something fun with the melody provided. Make it interesting. /10 Score: THE SCORE HAS TO BE NEAT AND LOOK GOOD. Or I will find a bamboo stick and hit a Japanese kid with it. DISHONOR ON YOU ALL. /5 Audio Presentation: Just make sure, if you are using midi, that each instrument "sounds" like the right sound. It doesn't have to be fancy, but it does have to be "right". /5 (+10) Short Essay: Write an analysis of your own piece. Say how you did EACH THING above. This is an educational experience, and for us to be able to peak into your compositional process will be very enlightening. IF THIS ESSAY IS 500 WORDS OR LONGER, YOU WILL RECEIVE 10 EXTRA POINTS! SO DO IT! 110 Possible points from each Judge. NOTE: You MAY ENTER more than one piece per person, provided they are part of the same "piece" (so different movements) and EACH movement is under five minutes respectively. Each movement will be judged completely separately, and your HIGHEST SCORING MOVEMENT will be entered into competition with the others. You only get to place once, basically. :) Judges: 1. JohnBucket 2. Sojar 3. Wayne-Scales 4. Aniolel Participants: (Post in the thread to participate) Remember, the limit of participation is 15 members per competition in order that the Judges can spend time writing quality reviews and paying enough attention to EACH piece. 1. Austenite Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Hey, Morivou - you forgot to add Sojar to the judging panel. Also, as expected... I'm into this one as an entrant.
Morivou Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 I forgot he asked already. :) And, you're added.
Sojar Voglar Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I confirm my jury partitipation! Please tell me when to start. I would also love to have these works uploaded together on the same page, so I will not be searching them all over the website. Thanks! :) 1
Morivou Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 Lol. Don't worry, Sojar. The judging process is made very easy for you. You will start on July 1st. You'll get a PM telling you what to do. And, thanks! 1
jsands Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Ok, I'm in as a competitor! Austentite, prepare for shock and awe... :relief:
jrcramer Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I might compete as well (Unless there as a penalty if I bail out) But I'd like to give robert an hard time :D 2
Morivou Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 Jr, no penalties for now. Until participation gets to the point where it matters. We've had an unprecedentedly large number of competitors for the competitions that were successful, so backing out penalties aren't needed right now. Jr and Js are added. 1
treehugger1995 Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 i want to wait a bit, to see if anyone else will judge, so that we won't have this problem. If someone else wants to judge, they will probably be better than me, but if no one wants to do it, I'll do it :)
Morivou Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012 Ok! Pending Judge. ;) I'll tell you if you're needed.
Austenite Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 So far I'm facing one of April winners (JSands) plus a very bold and skilled composer (Dscid) and nothing less than the man voted as YC's Best Composer for 2011 (Jaap Cramer). And these are just the first handful of entrants signing up! Certainly this will be no cakewalk at all :horrified: ...
Morivou Posted June 2, 2012 Author Posted June 2, 2012 This is YC! ;) This competition should be exciting.
Ananth Balijepalli Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Hey! I'll join the competition too, if that's ok. I have the need to write something in a romantic style again! 3
TJS Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 This seems to be filling up fast, so I should probably say yes before there's no spots left. I may have to back out later since June looks like it is going to be a busy month, but I have a feeling it might be okay. I had already been working on something because of the hint that had been given out, but now it looks like that's going to be put on the back burner. Damn. ;) Is the motif going to be taken from Romantic repertoire, or do we just have to wait and see? 1
Austenite Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 With the current lineup of YC heavyweights signing in for this one, I've gone from "home-field advantage" to total underdog in the last 12 hours. This is going to be really exciting... 1
Morivou Posted June 2, 2012 Author Posted June 2, 2012 Seems like the Summer + a more traditional competition has brought more people in. Excellent. At least participation is up. I will add everybody to the list now. Remember, only 15 people can enter any one competition officially. BUT, keep in mind the new rule listed at the top of the competition. If you want to write a piece for the competition anyway, go ahead. And, the judges might be able to review it, but not score it. And, if people drop out, then you can have their spots. The Waiting List, as I call it.
Morivou Posted June 2, 2012 Author Posted June 2, 2012 Over half the spots are filled up! O_O Let's keep it going!
Austenite Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Over half the spots are filled up! And that was just in the 10 hours following the opening of the official thread... EDIT: 500 posts! :w00t:
jsands Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 I think I had better start researching the Romantic period before I become COMPLETELY outclassed. When Austentite claims to be an underdog in a Romantic-style competition, you know you need to get your head down!
Morivou Posted June 2, 2012 Author Posted June 2, 2012 Alright, everybody! Wayne has announced his desire to be the last judge. If anybody else wants to judge, PLEASE feel free to PM me and I will step down. People have had enough of my reviews. ;) New people!
Austenite Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 People have had enough of my reviews. Certainly not me.
