The July 2012 Monthly Competition

Alright peoples! deadline is closing in. I will be gathering the "already finished" entries and listing them to make sure I've got them all tonight. Tomorrow is the last day for submissions. :)

Also, addendum to my submission, the update at 9:11pm was me figuring out how to get the score on there. I thought there was some special place to upload the score. Count it or don't. Had I 11 extra minutes to edit there would be far fewer abominations.

This is what I have. Did I miss anybody? There is still about 10-13 minutes left.

This piece is based upon the end of Deuteronomy and the beginning of Joshua. Moses is not permitted to go into the Promised Land but is able to see it

Deuteronomy 34 (NIV)
1 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, 2 all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea, 3 the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. 4 Then the LORD said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.”

5 And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said. 6 He buried him[a] in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. 7 Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. 8 The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over.

9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses.

Joshua and Caleb were the only two spies of the Twelve because of their honesty were able to inhabite the land. Then scriptures then proclaim:

10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you for your own.’” (Joshua 1, NIV)

AND WE ARE CLOSED! Judges. Begin your work. You have till the 5th.

Well, I can tell the judges will have heck of a homework - there are eleven twelve submissions and most of them are significantly worthy works ;) . Good luck to everyone!

Unfortunately, I never could find a workable download for word and what thought was word was actually not, but it was a power point producer. i barely had time to write it anyways because I am stuck doing homework for my music theory teacher. The guy asks for a lot. I won't be jumping out. What I am excited about is the comments; what I did wrong what I did right. My piece was about the Noah's Ark in biblical times. What I can tell you is that I tried to make the transitions as smooth as possible at the key changes. The beginning (m.1-28) Is basically the point where god makes his appearance to Noah and tells him to build an ark for his family and the animals that were pure would board it. Therefore you can hear God talking about it, as it foreshadows on the terror to come. After that we have out little "building" section (m.29-37), where I depict the building of the ark in more of a somber way and also the boarding of the animals. At the end of that we have a sudden movement of "water" and then we have our rush to close the door(m.38-45) and then FINALLY....... the flood begins. It rains for 40 days and 40 nights(m.46-84). Now there is a lot happening in between. First we have a cowbell, which represents maybe a few drops of water coming in through the windows or banging against the roof. Then we have our Timpani and Bass Drum rolls, which is representation of thunder. THEN there is the spiccato to arco melody. It is very distinct, meant to add that adventurous feeling of a boat being tossed around in the waves. Then the piano solo which represents a little moment where everything might die down for a second and then all of a sudden, drives it all back up with much more force (indicated by key change). Then we have another small piano solo with a trumpet-string accompaniment, which indicates the relief that the floods are now dying down for good. The boat will eventually come to a rest on a mountain, where I gradually closed the piece with some instruments ending and then more instruments joining in the last measure with voice.
