adamalexander89 Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Hello. Can anyone name some heroic, powerful, inspiring melodies, where the corrisponding harmony does not start on the tonic? Some examples would be Gustav Holst's theme from Jupiter, which starts on the subdominant, and Tchaikovsky Polonaise from Eugene Onegin, which starts on the dominant. Thank you in advance. Quote
Tokkemon Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Where the melody note or the *harmony* doesn't start on the tonic? Quote
adamalexander89 Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Thank you for replying Tokkemon and I'm sorry for not writing my question more clearly. I'm looking in particular for a melody, where the underlying harmony does not start on the tonic. The melody note may start anywhere. Quote
SYS65 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I'd say there are more melodies where melody doesn't start in the tonic than when it does, right now I have this song in the other tab, song is in F#m and first note madonna sings is G# (2nd or 9th)... I think when first note is in first tempo of the measure, (strong tempo) is more likely it will be one of the triad makes the perfect chord, tonic, 3rd or 5th, when it starts as anacrusis it might be other, but I don't think there's any kind of rule for this.
