ad hoc Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 I'm still available. I said I'd be here in October to judge. Just wondering, are Aniolel and I the only judges? 1 Quote

Kvothe Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 @Ad hoc: Violistist is also as a judge, i think. Quote
theviolinist7 Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Ok. Also, in the first post, it said the deadline was SEPTEMBER 30st. something about this seems wrong. Quote
Sarastro Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 I'm a bit concerned that this contest could get this site into legal trouble, because the guidelines ask and endorse use and manipulation of copyrighted material (please correct me if I'm wrong). Perhaps you should include some sort of legal disclaimer to go with the entries. Sort of "This is an arrangement/variations for educational purposes and it is not for lucrative use and I hereby this and thereby that and the responsibility of YC as a host for this competition lies here and ends there and such and such, and we do not encourage copyright violations". Austenite is a lawyer, he could help with the legal notice. Quote
Morivou Posted September 17, 2012 Author Posted September 17, 2012 Eh. You're probably right. It's also hairy because the internet is international. Oy. Whatever, I'll use my legal skillzzz and come up with something. 1 Quote
Austenite Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 ... it said the deadline was SEPTEMBER 30st. This is the deadline for entrants, not for judges. Their job starts on Sept. 30th. Quote
Tokkemon Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 The legal issue falls under fair use. These are derivative works (maybe even parody) and intended for educational use rather than monetary gain. So even if the guy was to sue the site, the piece could simply be rescinded and there's no harm, no foul. But honestly, do you think a composer would be such an a-hole that he would sue a kids site for making pieces based on *their* themes? I'd be flattered if that was me! 1 Quote
Morivou Posted September 18, 2012 Author Posted September 18, 2012 Austenite, the joke is that it is September thirty-IST, rather than thirty-ETH. Justin, I went ahead and added a bit. 1 Quote
Kvothe Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I agree with Justin opinion. No worries. Quote
Austenite Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I was about to post about the fair use doctrine when I noticed Justin's post. He's totally right. Also, we should make sure to credit the original source rather than to pass it as our own "invention". Quote
Morivou Posted September 18, 2012 Author Posted September 18, 2012 Yup. In Jacobs, we spent a month going over music copyright in professional situations and educational ones. It's a REALLY nice perk. Quote
Kvothe Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I remember that text; it is a nice law text. Quote
Kvothe Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 So far we have one entry here. Remember for the shake of the three judges it is best to enter them as early as possibly. Quote
dostoprimo Posted September 20, 2012 Posted September 20, 2012 Ok, here you go then! http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/3268/tetris-variations-augustseptember-competition/ Quote
Morivou Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 I'm still working on mine. :P 1 Quote
theviolinist7 Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 This is the deadline for entrants, not for judges. Their job starts on Sept. 30th. I wasn't talking about entrants/judges. It said 30st on it. 30st is not a word. Quote
theviolinist7 Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 ... I wasn't talking about entrants/judges. It said 30st on it. 30st is not a word. I should have read after the post....sorry. Quote
Austenite Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Never mind  . I hadn't even realized it had a 'st' after the 0 before the next post... 1 Quote
Kvothe Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Two entries so far, we have. Keep them coming. Remember the deadline is approaching, folks! Quote
Happenstance Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Would someone forward me to the directions for submitting the music? (I have a piece ready, I am new, and I can't find the specifics here) Quote
