keman Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 Hey,I mainly compose for films, and until now I've been writing music mainly for orchestra. I would love to start using electronic elements in my compositions, especially for action-driven cues. Something like this: During the first seconds the only real instruments used are the violas on the B.Unfortunately I have no idea how to start... Does anyone have some experience in this field, or know some good synth plug-ins and tutorials that allow me to create this kind of sounds? Quote
muhmuhmuhmusic Posted March 28, 2013 Posted March 28, 2013 This may not be the exact style of electronica you want, but I think Mason Bates would be good to look into: http://youtu.be/kAKX9x7sLO8?t=17m43s This whole piece is a suite for orchestra and electronics (and apparently a push broom as well...), and this last movement is pretty inclusive with the electronics. Earlier on, he layers NASA recordings over the composition, but this finale is where the orchestra accompanies the electronics. Bates is actually performing the electronics himself here. You can check out some his other stuff, it's very interesting what all he uses for sounds. This video has a few shots of his electronic part score and the software/hardware setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcWRxTk-E24 These kind of effects are created through a DJ sampling software and a sampling pad hardware, occasionally with a midi keyboard or EQ on the side. I believe something like a novation launchpad combined with ableton live should do the trick, which I'm currently playing around with.Of course, there are many pads and softwares (like fruity loops) that could probably work as well, but that's the type you're looking for, I believe. Ideally, you should be able to do this: (which is just totally awesome, in my opinion!) Lastly, Heiner Goebbels also used them pretty effectively in "Surrogate Cities", although I don't know what hardware/software setup he was using. The piece is amazing though, an hour and a half of insanely connected material. Here's the sampler part: http://youtu.be/mDClqgP3PPA?t=17m3s Test things out and see what sticks. Quote
