EstudioEvergreen Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Hello, I've been redirected here by someone else assuring this is a great place to learn about composition. The thing is Im a little bit lost in the forum, the different parts and this big sections with music and reviews. What are the different parts made for? If I want, for example, to post a song and ask for help about it, where would that belong? Thanks! Quote
dscid Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Well if you have specific questions, you can use the Ask YC subforum, or even bring up a topic in the composer's headquarters. If you have a work that you would like reviews - well, everyone here is in that boat. So post a piece, somewhere there is a button for it. It will place your song, based on the selected category of your work. Nobody is strictly obligated to review you, or give constructive criticism. Though, being good-natured, and affording other people your reviews, then generally you are better off and someone will give you some words. Hope this helps. Welcome - I can tell you this place has benefited many people (relatively) over the years... 1 Quote
EstudioEvergreen Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 If for example I have questions about how to get inspired or how to find the right melody, they belong here or does this forum only works for technical knowledge? I would like to become a great composer but now and then I don't know for example how to improve my compositions Quote
PSaun Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Getting inspired is a matter of close to things you like and things you like to do, those will give the best inspiration. As for melody that is a far more subjective concept. A melody could be very dull on its own but become interesting when paired with the right counterpoint or harmony. The melody is the subjective part of composition in my opinion, while harmony is much more driven by some objective theory people have made for their particular style. Just work on it and do what feels "good" or "right". 1 Quote

I would like to become a great composer but now and then I don't know for example how to improve my compositions You can ask anything you want about music in this forum. If you 'have questions about how to get inspired or how to find the right melody', you can make a thread dedicated to it - like you've done here - in the 'Advice and Techniques' section, for instance, or you can ask people in the shoutbox, message people (by going to their page), and whatever else. If you have a piece that's not finished, that you don't know what to do with, you can upload it: at the top of the page you'll see a tab that says 'Upload Music', and from there you can categorize it under 'Incomplete Works; Writer's Block and Suggestions'. 2 Quote
Kvothe Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 Getting started in Music Composition is tricky with out the proper knowledge and aural imagination. :D Nonetheless, both can be learned. I would started listening to music and pay careful attention to the sounds in which that music composition makes. Then try to emulate them. While you are doing this, pick a tome on harmony. Google harmony texts. There are great texts, new and old, out there will start teach harmonics. You will need, also, Counterpoint text too. Historically, I would say: The Study of Counterpoint, by Fux. Then you book on form. Or you score study. Orchestration too. Quote

Sarastro Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 For example, I've learned basic harmony during my studies, should I go deaper on that theme or learn a little bit of counterpoint, score study and orchestration? If you are actually asking this, you are probably not that interested in music, let alone composition. Quote
EstudioEvergreen Posted September 23, 2013 Author Posted September 23, 2013 If you are actually asking this, you are probably not that interested in music, let alone composition. Right now I'm interested in learning as fast as I can! So I have to choose closely my next step :D. While I find it I compose to practice :) Quote

Appreciate what you do; don't just rush through forcing yourself to move on to whatever the next big thing might be. You'll lose a lot that way. 1 Quote
pateceramics Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 I'm with Stirling. Take your time and be patient. When you know enough to know what you need to learn, you'll really have made some progress. That sounds like a basic thing, but it actually implies a pretty advanced grasp of the big picture, so don't worry too much about it for now. Just keep working, keep listening, keep asking questions and reading. You'll grow at the pace you are supposed to. It's about the long term result. Not the fastest path. Unless you are 95, you should have plenty of time. (: Welcome! 1 Quote
EstudioEvergreen Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 (edited) Hello, I would appreciate if you can say me a few words about this theme. It's for an android game, and even if it's quite finished I'm not totally satisfied with it. I'm not able to find the right sound for the instrument of the melody in the second part of the song. Maybe you have some words of wise advice? :) http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/5439/sky-knight-ost-vs-ocean-wizard/ Edited September 26, 2013 by EstudioEvergreen Quote
