Monkeysinfezzes Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Hello, I just purchased a new MacBook Pro, with 2.15 CPU, but it's STILL not even close to being fast enough to fully utilize Garritan Personal Orchestra, full reverb, for around 40 sounds playing at once. Hypothetically, what would be needed for that to one completely smoothly, without any clicks whatsoever? Quote
johannhowitzer Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 You probably need more memory - Garritan recommends at least one gigabyte. I have a gig and a half, and I've never had a problem. Good luck finding decently priced, convenient memory expansion for a MacBook though. Quote

Man, you should see the massive crackdown I have to do on my computer to get sample type software to run with any decency. I've just afforded myself a new digital piano, so a new computer is the next savings pot... Guest JohnGalt Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 Haha, I don't have any problems getting all the instruments I want on my desktop. 2 gigs DDR2 dualchannel RAM. However, anything more than 4 instruments on my laptop will slow it down, and 10 will crash it. Memory upgrade is the way to go. Quote
giselle Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 I'm pining for a new RAM card for my laptop, it can only handle a gig max - but I'm poor, so we'll see. - I don't even have the $200 for that. GPO recommends a min of 1 gig RAM? Day-um. The program I use recommends 768 mb, but it's limited. Still, it's slow. Quote
Monkeysinfezzes Posted July 23, 2006 Author Posted July 23, 2006 I'll show all my specs if that is of any help: MacBook Pro 15'' Machine Model: MacBook Pro 1,1 CPU Type: Intel Core Duo Number of Cores: 2 CPU Speed: 2.16 GHz L2 Cache (shared): 2 MB Memory: 2 GB Bus Speed: 667 MHz Yet it's still not fast enough for Garritan Quote
giselle Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 lmao. I can't financially keep up with all this crap. I'm just going to kidnap the Philadelphia Orchestra and lock them in my linen closet. Quote
Guest Nickthoven Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I actually had the idea of spawning (or most likely adopting) like 60 children and teaching them all different instruments in an orchestra, and have them play for me!! ;) Laptops suck for any powerful use. I'm going to get one of those nice big Mac moniter/computers for my next computer. When I'm rich. And cool. Anyway, I still don't understand all the hubbub about GPO and Kontackt and samples and junk...it's still not the real thing, so why bother? When I put a piece into Sibelius, all I really want to hear are the notes anyway. I want them clear and precise so I know what I'm getting into, I don't really need to hear them all reverbed and 'life-like' (keyword like). Oh well. Quote

Would you force them to have sectionals and practice sheets? ;) Anyway, I still don't understand all the hubbub about GPO and Kontackt and samples and junk...it's still not the real thing, so why bother? I like it so I can make at least quasi realistic CDs to send to my parents when they ask about my progress. midis just don't really give that nice effect :D Plus, it's fun to me. Also, the midi violin/viola sound like a dying cat (I don't remember who made that up on here, but that is BRILLIANT). It's just hard to listen to when you're trying to get an idea of what you've just copied into the computer, ya know? :D Quote
johannhowitzer Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 I think the reason you don't understand the perks of the GPO, Nick, is because you've had the privilege of working with many ensembles and had many works of yours read or even performed. I for one have not, I've only spent a year in a college-level wind ensemble. It's much harder for me to envision what a piece would sound like, so the GPO supplies a sound that's a least a ghost of what a real orchestra would sound like, timbrally if nothing else. MIDI is much less helpful... I used to get frustrated all the time because MIDI playback would destroy the aural concept in my brain. GPO doesn't do that. Sure, I admit it's a little bit of a crutch, but as I've kinda had to walk around limp due to lack of ensemble experience, it's very helpful for now. I too use the GPO for providing my friends and family with recordings of what I'm doing. They can't hear what's going on in my head. Quote
