Good questions, you can only submit one entry (so make it a good one!). You can also revise your entry until the due date. You can submit a pre-existing piece but I'd encourage you to compose something new. It can have more than one movement as long as it is under 10 minutes.

Also, it can be difficult but if it's too difficult I may not select it for that reason. Try to go for musicality over virtuosity if possible. Thanks!

Count me in. I am already putting the finishing touches on a three-movement piece specially composed for this competition. It is around 2.5 minutes long. Might I call it a "sonatina"? Or does that always entail the following of sonata/sonatina form? What other names are available for a short three-movement piano piece?

It follows the form of my bagatelles, soliloquies and sententiae for piano (i.e. AABBA1, AABBC, AABC, or somesuch). Only the movements are more related to each other and intended to be played as a whole (following a pattern of fast - slow - fast) than is usually the case with my sententiae. I think that calling them a "collection" of three miniatures or sententiae would not describe them in the best way possible. And each movement is a little longer than a 'sententia'. That's why I was thinking of calling them 'sonatina'. However, I want to be sure that that would be acceptable. I won't do so if the name is not used more loosely but is restricted to pieces strictly following sonata/sonatina form.

I think you should go whole hog, and call it a "paragraph".

I think Triplum or Terzetto would be a good name for a three-part composition, one also reflecting your independence from hidebound traditional forms.

Sonata just means a piece that is "sounded" (ie played, as opposed to sung) and is a rather generic title—though in no way an inappropriate one, as a study of the œuvre of John White (with many sonatas under 2.5 minutes and bearing no relation to the textbook sonata form) will show.

Thanks Shadowwolf. I will go ahead and name it 'sonatina' then, since if John White has even used 'sonata' for works "under 2.5 minutes and bearing no relation to the textbook sonata form", then surely 'sonatina', being reserved for a shorter and simpler work would be even more appropriate.

I have a piece I might submit, but due to the nature of the writing it is very impractical, if at all possible, to make a MIDI rendition.

Dang -- I got completely screwed up on this one! Somehow I had the idea that this was due in June, not May - much less May 9th!!

Of course I wouldn't be able to write a quality work in the few hours left before the deadline, esp. when not at home. :mad: :sadtears:
