waves Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I have sung choral music old and new, and I have found that I don't really like the new stuff. I was wondering if I was alone in this. If anyone can recommend a modern choral composer that has a more traditional style, I would be thankful. Quote
luderart Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I like Arvo Pärt's choral music. Even though it is modern, it is deep and meaningful and has a certain simplicity. 1 Quote
KJthesleepdeprived Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I never listen to recently composed choral music except for the mock-ups that get posted on this forum by such composers as The Marvelous Mademoiselle PateCeramics. Most of the choral music I listen to is church stuff like hymns and the annual Handel's Messiah performance that happens in every heavily churched region around here. Maybe I'll start listening to some, especially if you guys give some suggestions on this thread. 1 Quote
Ken320 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 (edited) If you like the denseness of Penderecki then you might like his Opera, The Devils of Loudon. Eric Whitacre has written some very moving works, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQBNDnrS8HY Or if you're just plain bored with choral works, check this out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e-cSo5Y8JU Edited May 9, 2014 by Ken320 1 Quote

pateceramics Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Yeah Schnittke! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4dT8FJ2GE0&list=FLQBRSE2JX2Wv4PE15UNvVnQ&feature=share&index=26 (You are not allowed to listen to this one without good bass speakers. You'll thank me later.) http://youtu.be/2_RrIZ0ReXM Lauridsen… mmmmmm… http://youtu.be/W86a2o3uaLs Can we count Thompson as "modern?" He died in '84. http://youtu.be/XEKBpKTdxj8 How about Barber? He died in '81 His "Agnus Die" aka the choral version of the Adagio for Strings: http://youtu.be/SW743K3yDms Quote
danishali903 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Not really into choral music. The most modern choral work I heard and liked was the St. Luke Passion by Penderecki. I think its very effective and moving. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkqydMUOoEs Quote

It's funny but in choral music the room is just as important as the content. Edited May 9, 2014 by Ken320 Quote
Morivou Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Dude. My LIFE is contemporary choral music. :D Without repeating any listed above, I bet you'd like these composers: John Tavener (just died...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8-cFRjcdU0 C.V. Stanford https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJcad_kowuI [The bluebird is BEAUTIFUL!] Not SO modern, but Durufle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=457nVpxJDkA Ola Gjeilo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J99pF91b5fQ (why is there not a good recording of this piece... GRR) Also by Ola: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l-smZ9lUEE One of the masterpieces of his genre. I have tons of other resources too. Let me know if you want more. :) 1 Quote
pateceramics Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Aww… "The Lamb" always makes me cry. So gorgeous. 1 Quote
luderart Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Thanks Morivou for the Tavener link. The Lamb, which I hadn't heard before, is a very beautiful piece that impacts you beyond the 3.5 minutes that it takes and lingers on in your mind and heart. Too bad I learned that it's composer had died. He was one of the contemporary composers whose music I explored and appreciated some years ago. Quote
Flashback Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Choral music is my life! And I love contemporary choral music! This is one of my favourites, from a very unknown composer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZxL07GavMA Quote
U238 Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) No. Absolutely noone. It's a surprise that people write new music of any kind these days, let alone new choral music. I know that sarcasm doesn't translate well through text, so I'll rephrase that. What a dumb loving question. Edited September 16, 2014 by U238 Quote
Sojar Voglar Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 There are many great composers of choral music today. It is hard to pick the finest of them. Quote

U238 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Old allies under new usernames? I was curious about something. The stupid drove all the allies away, I'm the only one with any kind of endurance. Quote
U238 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 I was irritable that day. Despite the fact that Crt is pretty frustratingly wrong about a bunch of things in my opinion, I shouldn't have come at him like that. I'm trying not to be that guy anymore. Quote
