ToCompose Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Why is it that everytime I listen to music, I love the repetition of phrases, and when I am composing myself I never feel like repeating any of my phrases .... it is so freaking annoying. Anyone with a similar experience? 1 Quote
asdfghqwert Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Well, I actually like it when good sounding parts in a piece are repeated but I don't feel like repeating phrases one-on-one either. I only did it when I was starting out with composing but that changed after a while and now I'm getting a fan of repeating phrases (at least slightly) varied. I have no idea why I feel this way though. Here's an article discussing why we like repetition in music btw: http://aeon.co/magazine/altered-states/why-we-love-repetition-in-music/ Thought it would interest you. I think I actually found this link by browsing through this forum some weeks ago. Quote

Anyone with a similar experience? I don't find the repetition that tricky, but I tend to end phrases on the V7 chord too often and I don't end with the tonic enough. It seems to make the structure of the piece harder to hear Quote

Somehow it bores me? to repeat it later if nothing new is happening to it. maybe i just have to get used to that.? I have tried a lot of ways in my structure but the thing of keeping it interesting by variation and repeats is difficult for me. 1 Quote

Do you have an example piece where you struggle with this? Here's the piece I'm working on at the moment: Score: http://goo.gl/Dk3pPE Audio: http://goo.gl/XhcR6J If you look at measure 9, it should probably end on the tonic, to round the phrase off nicely, but at the moment I end on the V7... I like it how it is, but I'm looking for a way to end on the tonic, then continue the next bar starting on the tonic again (which would probably require m9 to end with an emphatic tonic chord on a strong beat and an off beat V7, which is a possible solution.) I've had a review of my work mention Harmonic Syncopation before so I'm mindful of this, even though I don't know whether I should be... Quote

I dont have it on paper yet, but I have something similar to what you sent me. I now end the first part on the V7 and after on the tonic. It seems to give a clearer structure to that section. Is there a moment where you repeat one of these segments later on and feel weird about it? Quote

Well, I'm still not convinced about my first repeat of the main theme (measure 6), with the flute and bassoon both using the 3rd degree. I think it clashes too much for my tastes.. I think I've disguised the lack of a rounded phrase by using repetition in the transitional passages, but that's a biased opinion! Quote
