Pieter Smal Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 What training do you have as a composer Did you receive training under a secondary/tertiary teacher? A music degree specialising in composition perhaps? Quote
pateceramics Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Nope. Lots of time performing music, but no composition study. I managed to audit a little bit of music theory one semester, but not the whole course. I study scores I like, slowly plow through some theory books, and I pick up a lot through osmosis on this site. (: Thank you all for sharing your collective knowledge! 3 Quote
KJthesleepdeprived Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 I've got an orchestration book, some tips from my old high school band, orchestra, and choir directors, and this forum. Quote
Shadowwolf3689 Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Lots of music teachers, choirs (until my voice broke), many books, Spotify, IMSLP and a BA. Quote
Plutokat Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 I'm getting my third degree (doctorate in music arts with an emphasis in composition) in music composition. Other than that a lot of music training in ensembles from middle school and high school, and music theory in high school. Quote
U238 Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Six+ years of academic study, a decade and a half of private study. Quote
robinjessome Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 I went via B.Mus and M.Mus performance degrees and found that I was writing as much as playing. You'll find in Jazz Studies programs that composition is given a lot of attention. Quote
Koalable Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 (edited) Lots of listening to Music Scores and Classical Stuff. Then following the actual scores while they are being performed on stage (video recording). Really crazy. Then I started looking into great performers and realized I could do this. Self taught everything. Never took a piano lesson, never took a violin lesson. Figured out how to sight read and write on demand. I really need to get on all of that though. My clock is ticking. Addendum: I never knew hard until I discovered the Goldberg Variations. Edited June 30, 2014 by Koalable Quote
nanotyrano Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Only training in piano here. I've gotten all my composing techniques from listening to scores and compiling tips I've read on the Internet, but I may begin to read some orchestration books. Quote
