Sonataform Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Composing an effective melody is not an easy thing to do. Even for the best writing a melody can be a daunting task. But I believe it's an important skill for any composer to have, so this is the challenge; -Compose a piece for piano with a beautiful melody. It could be a waltz, prelude, nocturne, etc.... I just want the most lovely melody your muse can come up with. -It can be in any harmonic language (Baroque, Romantic, Modern...) -The piece can't already have a live recording, I want to be the first to record it  . -Piece length cannot exceed 6 minutes. -Due date October 1st. The winner of the competition will have their work recorded by me (and I'm currently searching to upgrade my recording setup) -Last rule, have fun! 3 Quote
Austenite Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 I believe melodies to be one of my few strenghts as a composer, so this suits me pretty well. 1 Quote
DanJTitchener Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 This sounds interesting! Count me in. Writing the melody is what I love the most about composing Quote
mozartinspiration Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Ah Ah, I think I will win. I have this awesome melody. I am in! Gonna beat all you guys! 1 Quote
MuseScience Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 (edited) I think I'll give this one a shot. Edit: Okay, here's my submission. http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/6768/nocturne-for-bailey-fall-piano-contest-entry/ Edited August 11, 2014 by MuseScience Quote
luderart Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 (edited) What about a minimum length for the piece? Might it be around 1 minute long or less? Edit: I assume there is no minimum length. So here's my entry: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/6779/nocturne-no-1/ Edited August 13, 2014 by luderart Quote
MuseScience Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Okay, so I think we should cover something that hasn't been mentioned yet. Who is going to judge this competition? Will it be Sonataform by himself, or are you (Sonataform) going to assign a panel of judges like some of the previous competitions? And so far the competitors are: 1). ChristianPerrotta 2). Austenite 3). DanJTitchener 4). Thatguy v2.0 5). Mozartito 6). Mozartinspiration 7). MuseScience 8). bkho 9). luderart Just trying to help this get a little bit more organized. :) Quote
Sonataform Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 (edited) @Luderart: No minimum time limit, you're good. @MuseScience: Thanks for making the list of those competing. I'll remain the sole judge in my competitions though and for a few reasons: 1. I like to choose a piece I feel I can interpret as a pianist. 2. Though I like a good challenge I don't want to be stuck with a piece that's impossible to play. 3. Ultimately the whole competition simply runs smoother. 4. I could think of more reasons but those are basically the most important ones  Overall I strive to be a fair judge. I'm just as likely to pick a piece that's super "modern" as I am super "conservative". Those labels mean nothing to me, I simply judge every piece on it's own merits. My mantra has always been, "Good music is simply the result of inspiration and hard work." Edited August 14, 2014 by Sonataform 2 Quote
