There aren't "sound engineering" universities. I mean, I'm sure there is a post-secondary institution devoted to sound engineering. However, generally most people who take sound engineering as a major attend a university that offers it as a degree program.

So, you don't have to get into a school that requires an extensive background. You just need to get into college. There are entry level classes.

You become professional by doing the grind. Everybody wants to be famous, nobody wants to do the work.

Where are you Dag?  Sound engineering courses are pretty common at community colleges and community arts centers too.  You just need to be willing to pay the class fee.  No experience necessary.  And if you have any local theatre or live music venues you can go volunteer and learn how to run the sound boards from the more experienced people there to get yourself started.  Cost:  free.  Smaller places are more likely to welcome unexperienced volunteers in exchange for your free labor.
