One of my heaviest musical inspirations and idols passed away yesterday, and I think you should all check him out.

Kenny Wheeler - one of the most unique and distinct voices in modern music - both as a composer for large and small ensembles, as well as a trumpet/flugelhornist and improvisor.  Kenny's music had an amazingly profound impact on me and my musical evolution. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, and performing with him once.  He was a truly humble and brilliant artist.

Some listening, in no real order...

  • The Opening from Music For Large Ensembles - possibly THE greatest album of contemporary jazz orchestra writing, this is the opening track, and hooks you in.
  • Here's Parts II & III. (You'd do well to listen to the whole record. Kenny was the master of long-form pieces )
  • Gnu Suite
  • Hotel le Hot
  • Now and Now Again (SO BEAUTIFUL!)

Anyway, just wanted to put this out there.
