Composing Short Pieces Using A Theme By Danjtitchener

Hello everyone,

You might take the first 4 or 8 bars. I hope everyone can make good use of this theme and both the author of the theme and the participants can benefit from the challenge.

Although it's really short, I think I pretty much succeeded to make the theme my own (which I believe to be the real challenge in these challenges).

I hadn't been composing too much lately, so the challenge acted as a good stimulus.


 

I think I'm going to try a vocal quartet. Maybe I'll get it performed if it's good enough. Anyone have any good ideas for lyrics?

Lyrics? Vocal quartet? You sure are making a challenge of this challenge!

I'm not sure what to do myself. I think maybe I'll not write for piano this time, but beyond that I haven't figured out what I'll write. Maybe something for harp since I was trying to get the hang of writing for it. Yeah that's what I'll do. Now I just need to figure out what form, style, and such...

who knew writing in lyrics could be so fun! well... probably has something to do with the fact that i'm just using my own made-up language. it's still fun though, you guys should all try it.

EDIT: mine is probably gonna be up before the end of next week. and i'll leave it at this, it's going to be a very "unique" vocal quartet.

Well, I'm still working on mine. It may take a while. I have more time now, but it isn't an easy thing. This theme has been a challenge for me from the start in a way that luderarts wasn't.

I already have the idea to compose mine, but I'll only have time after this saturday (I've written some bars already). I want to make it, but I'm really going nuts with some events happening here these days....

Mines finished. It's getting performed on Wednesday. I'll hopefully have it up by the end of this week

I think the only person still composing their take is danishali, so i guess whenever that one gets finished we move on. Unless somebody else says they are going to join the party.

Shall we have a 3rd competition?
Any suggestions for the theme?
 

Oh right! forgot about this whole thing. I think we should do another one. These challenges were a good thing and it shouldn't stop at two!

I'm not sure whose theme we should use though.

And my idea for a new theme would be, instead of choosing one from an existing piece by one of us, to compose new themes specifically for these challenges. I think that that way, we would have more suitable themes. Moreover, the composer of the theme would themselves be able to participate in the challenge and not be left out of it, as is currently the case.

What about a 16 Day, 16 Bar challenge in which entrants try to write the best short theme possible? :P

Just the theme?  Exactly 16 bars?  No harmonization of the theme?  Elaborate a bit as to what you have in mind, I'm trying to picture how to write something satisfying that's that short.  Or would you just write as normal, introduce your theme, and have to stop dead after 16 bars, the winner being the person everyone most wanted to keep going.  (:
