KJthesleepdeprived Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) All right, since we've already used up the last thread's maximum capacity for threadiness, here is a new one. It is here that we will post stuff for the Third YC Theme Challenge. So yeah. Here we go :D EDIT: Since I failed to explain this post clearly upon initially making it, I shall clarify everything. This challenge involved every participant submitting a theme of 16 bars. These themes were then randomly assigned to other people such that everyone involved must compose something using one of these themes as well as one based on their own theme. Aquatunic will work on JFTF's theme Luder will work on Pater's theme Christian will work on Austenite's theme Pater will work on Danish's theme Danish will work on Dan's theme Dan will work on KJ's theme JFTF will work on Christian's theme KJ will work on Luder's theme Austenite will work on Aqua's theme Important Information for Late Additions: The system of random assignment was necessary to ensure that all themes submitted were used and no one who composed one was left out. However, anyone who did not initially submit a theme when discussions about this challenge were underway in the previous thread may choose any one of these themes to work with and upload it when the they are finished. You should then post a link to your upload in this thread to let us know you participated so we can check it out. Just because you weren't one of the ones who was given a theme, doesn't mean you can't participate! Everyone is encouraged to join us in this challenge! Like I said, we just did it this way to make sure there were themes to use, and people to use them. Here are the links to various themes: Austenite: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7226/16-bar-theme-yc-challenge-jan-2015/ Danish: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7212/16%20Bar%20Melody Christian: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7213/Melodia Pate: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7215/16%20Bar%20Theme%20Challenge KJ: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7214/YC%20Theme%20Challenge:%20The%20Third%20Round%20%22Death%20Match%22 JFTFT: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7218/16-bar-challenge/ Dan: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7221/16-Bar%20Challenge Luder: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7222/16-bar-theme-challenge/ Aqua: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7224/%2216%22%20Bar%20Challenge As an afterthought, everyone should bear in mind that someone had the idea to wait before listening to the music so they can hear the music by both the original composer of the theme and the participant to whom the theme was assigned. Everyone doesn't need to do this, but it's an option if anyone would like to do that but hadn't thought of it or forgot. :D Edited March 1, 2015 by KJthesleepdeprived 2 Quote
KJthesleepdeprived Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 p7rv, I have edited the post to give more clear explanation. Sorry for the confusion. Feel free to participate using one of the themes! Quote
danishali903 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Too late to join? Not at all! This ain't a formal "competition" any who. Just pick one of the themes (or two if you're feeling ambitious) and start. 1 Quote
KJthesleepdeprived Posted February 8, 2015 Author Posted February 8, 2015 Absolutely as Danish said! This is open to anyone and everyone willing to participate using one of these themes. The only reason we formally assigned themes to people as in the above post was to make sure nobody's theme was wasted. But for anyone else who's a bit late to the party, we won't crinkle our noses at you :P The whole point of this challenge is to observe different creative minds working from the same material to produce different results. So in other words, this is all for fun! Please do join in Thatguy and p7rv. I'd love to hear your work on one of these themes. Quote
pateceramics Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I'm just about done. Anybody else getting close? Don't want to post mine and then have someone accidentally stumble across it while checking the new uploads. Do we want to have an official grand unveiling date? Quote
ChristianPerrotta Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I'm almost done it's been a while. I just can't finish it properly... I'll probably finish it this weekend. Quote

KJthesleepdeprived Posted February 27, 2015 Author Posted February 27, 2015 I haven't been able to even start, but I'm still committed to somehow do this. Just don't push too much :horrified: ... I know how you feel Austenite! I've only managed to get a collage of yet unrelated segments onto paper and some of it into Finale. This is definitely gonna take a while. And to think I was going to set a six week deadline  I'll be really surprised if I make it by then! 1 Quote
pateceramics Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Haha! Okay! Just didn't know where everyone else had gotten to. No rush! (: Quote
bkho Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 This sounds like a cool contest. Too bad I missed out, many of the themes have some nice potential. Quote
pateceramics Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I don't think we ever officially closed the competition, did we? Just pick one and come play if you like. The contest that never ends… (: 1 Quote
Aquatunic Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 This sounds like a cool contest. Too bad I missed out, many of the themes have some nice potential. bkho. I'm not trying to force you into anything, but if you do decide to join in, do you think you could work on JFTF's theme. My normally busy schedule at this time of year has prevented me from doing any kind of composing. Chances are, i won't be ready in time for the big reveal of everyone's pieces and everyone will be waiting for me. i still plan on composing it but if you could do me a huge favor and do JFTF's theme as well it would make my life a lot less stressful. KJthesleepdeprived Posted March 1, 2015 Author Posted March 1, 2015 This sounds like a cool contest. Too bad I missed out, many of the themes have some nice potential. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT too late to join! You can pick any theme you like (or multiple themes even!) and work with it. This isn't at all a closed contest and you should feel free to participate. I thought I made that clear in my original post  Quote
KJthesleepdeprived Posted March 1, 2015 Author Posted March 1, 2015 I've further edited the original post in my haphazard attempt to make the "open-ness" of this very very open and totally non-exclusive challenge as clear as possible. I never knew that I was so bad at communicating information like this  Quote
bkho Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Well, I guess I'll tentatively put my hat in the ring, though no promises :). Quote
JFTFT Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Yeah I totally benched all composition for the past two weeks, but I think (hope) I've had enough time to ruminate. This challenge is on the top of my to-do list though. 1 Quote
ChristianPerrotta Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I won't finish that fast any more. I'm redoing everything. I didn't like it at all! (it was like a classical string quartet... not my vibe) Quote
ChristianPerrotta Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Ok, not that long... here it is: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7321/Impromptu%20(for%20flute%20and%20clarinet) 1 Quote
Austenite Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Ok, not that long... here it is: http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7321/Impromptu%20(for%20flute%20and%20clarinet) I just realized that it was you who had my theme! I have now reviewed it - although I would also like to listen to the other, "classically-poised" version :pinch: , which, despite your own misgivings about it, must be already a great work given your outstanding compositional skills. Thanks a lot! 1 Quote
pateceramics Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Here's mine! I had Danish's. http://www.youngcomposers.com/music/listen/7323/become-ye-righteous-yc-theme-challenge/ Quote
KJthesleepdeprived Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 Mine isn't likely to come soon. I'm working on the piece using my own theme first, since I've got more ideas for that one. I'm really excited about it though! Quote
JFTFT Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Yeah Danish, no kidding...can't wait to listen to the other "re-themes". I really wish listening to music was as easy as it sounds. Quote
