Comunal Composition V.2

Don't worry, Nick, as a classically trained concert pianist I'm quite capable of sorting this out. Actually, I kinda beat you to it, I just didn't post my edit. That last measure is problematic rhythmwise, a lot of the notes in the left-hand figuration clash with the right-hand triplet chords.

It's going to take a little while to make sense of this and write my part, so be patient.

Let's do this, Howie, you write out the exposition with no regards to the intro. The intro should be written afterwards anyway so it can contain certain elements of the main theme and lead into the suite itself. I will rewrite the introduction after all this is done so i can weave it directly into the exposition. It would be easier for me to do something like that than to completely wing a piano introduction. After I've done than, I will allow you to look over the piano part and let me know any corrections or modifications I need to make. This seems the most logical order of things to me.

So we'll all wait on you to come up with the exposition, and then take off from there. Don't feel burdened by the written introduction, i'll just work on something afterwards. I might junk the part Letehn wrote as well, as it leads me into a pretty hectic piano part. For further note, I appologize for my piano writing. I was really working out more of a reduction of an orchestrated intro. I'll try my best to not bring this whole piece down single-handedly!

What a fun project you guys are embarking on - Jeremy (Invisionary) & I wrote a combined Oboe Concerto back in 2003, that was lots of fun! Maybe i'll post it here sometime... :(

No need. Jeremy already posted it. :D

Ok, you're going to have to explain to me the form of a Scherzo before I can think of writing anything. Also, whether or not I should use any themes from the first movement. Everything else I'm sure I can handle, but I don't want to create something free-form and more modern to only have someone more traditionally-minded write something that makes mine seem out of place, which I am willing to accept as a fact of life.

The scherzo as a type of movement was created by Beethoven to replace the dance movement (usually a minuet) that was used in earlier symphonies. Hence, it originated mainly as a parody of the minuet and trio, and still has the same form: ABA, with the B section contrasting. Later composers sometimes wrote scherzos in rondo form, but ABA or ABAB'A are still most common.

I'm proposing to write that trio.

I would have loved to have taken part but I only have Finale 2005 and my computer's gone down (damn hard disk...) Can't wait to hear the finished product though!!! ;)

Well Caltech, I can write the Scherzo A and you can write the B! We'll do an ABABA, so we both get a chance to write more, and I'll keep mine smaller. :( Sound good? ...or am I misunderstanding what you meant?

Well, if we want this to be even the least coherent, you should probably at least wait until I get some exposition out there! Otherwise we'd be writing the thing backward, which would probably have some unforeseeable negative results.

That said, I am terribly sorry, but I am compositionally out of commission until Monday. Those who have kept up on recent events should know why... I'm sorry it can't be avoided. I will get on the ball as soon as I get back. Today's a busy day, and I'll be gone all weekend.

It's great to see lots of interest. I'll pin the thread so that it stays in the spotlight during Jonathan's absence!

Well, I am back from my weekend, and I've worked some on this thing, though it's not quite how I want it and there's more to be written. I'll hopefully have it done by Thursday, because on Friday I leave for another two weeks! What do my fellow composers think of this little bit of exposition? Stylistically consistent? Feel free to be harsh with me if this doesn't seem adequate, but realize I have limited time to fix any problems. Also, note that I haven't really done any editing, and this is very short.

You know what? Sorry, everyone, but this isn't working and I'm out of time. Rather than ask you all to wait until I get back in two weeks for the exposition so this can get off the ground, is there someone else who'd like to take over? Nick, perhaps? You can either use what I've got and add to it, or you can start from scratch. This project caught me at a very bad time... if I'd known I was going to be this indisposed, I never would have signed up!
