EmperorWeeGeeII Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 While trying a single movement violin sonata (again) i ended up getting stuck on a chord progression. I've then tried many chords/inversions by ear but all of them sounded odd. I need some help figuring this out. Image and audio attached. The part that needs the chords are highlighted. chord.mp3 MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu chord > next Quote
DanJTitchener Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Have you tried, instead of going to the F, staying on the G flat and having the V harmony beneath the note (minus the second degree)? I think it sounds so expressive, especially when followed by F and Eb.PS: confusing key sig! Quote
wayne-scales Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 You're probably looking for something like this. However, there are several issues with the score (it should be written in common time, the dynamics are unbalanced between the two instruments, there's no bowing in the violin) and, judging by the style you seem to be going for, there are also problems with the harmony: top and bottom lines are in octaves the whole time (making the thing sound essentially one-dimensional), no proper bass support for the harmony in mm. 4–5 (viio is weak in a context like this; it should be viio6), the cadential gesture in mm. 11–12 is not supported by a cadential bass (which I've changed, above; having F there gives octaves with the violin btw), and the gesture you've begun in mm. 14–15 makes no 'sense' (14 doesn't outline a harmony, in this style). ycEWGsuggestedchords.WAV 1 Quote
EmperorWeeGeeII Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 ...Is it okay if i told you i didn't understand much of your vocaulary? haha Like, from "harmony in mm. 4-5..." onwards didn't make sense for me. I was like "14-15 makes no sense? i didn't even write on staves 14-15... wait... i think he means something else". Also, what do you mean by "top and bottom lines"? 1 Quote
KJthesleepdeprived Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 ...Is it okay if i told you i didn't understand much of your vocaulary? haha Yeah... the struggle. Sometimes I don't understand what people are saying either! Quote
wayne-scales Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 If you can't understand this, you should consider investing in a book and/or lessons. Quote
EmperorWeeGeeII Posted May 24, 2015 Author Posted May 24, 2015 Oh now it makes sense! Bars 14-15 really don't have harmony. I changed that part though, i can handle it from here. Quote
