Noah Brode Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Here is my submission for the Summer 2016 competition. Apparently, I like to cut it close. Feedback is much appreciated. Austenite Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 This piece definitely deserves more attention than it has gotten so far. Perhaps this is the "darkhorse" entry for the competition... From its very beginning, it's pretty clear that you're very comfortable writing for a chamber orchestra (in fact, I'm not really sure if this belongs on the "chamber" forum or the orchestral one, since I'm guessing you'll need a conductor). The piece is well-rounded and has a direction, and while you tend to play it safe when it comes to harmony, the bolder ones thrown here and there spice the music up at times. There's a sense of the impending drama that possibly contributes to this, even if a given listener is not familiarized with Shakespeare's play. Well done! Quote
Noah Brode Posted August 18, 2016 Author Posted August 18, 2016 Thanks for your compliments, Austenite! I am humbled by the other entries to the competition, but win or lose, I'm glad I wrote this piece, since as you mentioned it involved me getting out of my harmonic comfort zone and spicing things up a bit at times. Hopefully the experience will allow me to be a bit more adventurous in future compositions (and competitions!) as well. Thanks again for listening and commenting -- it's much appreciated. Quote
Luis Hernández Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 This is amazing. The instruments combine perfectly, with the violin as leader. Some parts are quite dramatic. I think your approach (tonal) goes well with the theme. Right, here and there are that quartal harmony (in the end?) but I don't feel it doesn't fit. It's also a pleasure to see the score. Thanks. Noah Brode Posted September 8, 2016 Author Posted September 8, 2016 Thanks for listening Luis, and thanks also for your kind words. It didn't win, but I was happy with how it turned out in such a short time period. Quote
