Monarcheon Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Recent addition to the daily sketch series, and I wanted to see if I could match my own competition theme. I was also kind of on a time crunch to write that day (hedging...) so the results did not follow my criteria very well. It ended coming out more of a "Fantasy on Some Themes" rather than a "Variations on a Theme". However, I still think the result is decently pleasant. Please enjoy this fantasy on themes by Hovhaness from "And God Created Creat Whales"! MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu Sketch No. 65 (Hovhaness) > next Quote
Luis Hernández Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 This is a bit more odd than other sketches. The intro and the end ara a good frame. The main body sounds as a continuity, I suppose because the melodic line is constant in the rhythm and in the melody shape, too. sometimes it sounds "oriental". Anyway the increasing feeling of intensity is present., And the change in 2:40 is welcome. Quote
fishyfry Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Very nice. I had not heard of Hovhaness, and I'm so glad you introduced him to me. I listened to your fantasia and the original back to back. I get a particular mystical joy from simple pentatonic melodies like this theme. In this case, I thought it sounded Celtic in nature. Anyways, I think what you did with the material worked well. Especially after I became familiar with the original, I found your work very emotionally effective. It begins mysteriously, and grows to a point of real power. It's just a shame there's no way to incorporate a whale song into a solo piano piece. Quote

I remember playing that piece a long time ago for the first time. My mind was blown, haha! Thanks for both of your comments. Quote
