luderart Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 This is my first composition for accordion. I was inspired to compose a soliloquy for accordion after I received an accordion CD as a gift and was impressed how many famous classical pieces could be arranged for and played by the accordion, even orchestral pieces. fishyfry Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 I know nothing about the accordion, so I couldn't comment on how well you may or may not have written for the instrument. I suppose that the mentality of writing for such an instrument is not so different from writing for organ, with perhaps more limitation. I would be interested to hear what kind of considerations have to be taken to write idiomatically for the accordion. But that's sort of irrelevant anyway. I quite enjoyed this. I think I might here a little Bach influence. The piece seems to flow smoothly for the most part, and I think it works the way you wanted it to. The midi is so heavy (more like an organ) that I have a hard time hearing it as if played by an accordion. Anyways, I think you've done a good job here. 1 Quote
Monarcheon Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 As far as I know, that looks pretty reasonable for accordion... it'd have to be a big one though. Like, somewhat uncommonly big. I'd recommend checking some out; some ones don't have a huge keyboard. Chords would be better written in tablature. It sounded nice with the exception of many enharmonic tones clashing... a very difficult thing to mitigate in counterpoint. Most of the time, when it happens, the difference is a major second, and typically doesn't resolve correctly, hence the awkward sound. That's not super common though. Otherwise it was pretty okay. 1 Quote
Luis Hernández Posted October 13, 2016 Posted October 13, 2016 The work is pretty. Although it seems more like an organ than an accordion. Not only for the sound of the vst, but for the writing itself. Well, I suppose any instrument can be played in many different ways. But here in my country the accordion is a traditional instrument in the North, and it's very different. 1 Quote
luderart Posted October 15, 2016 Author Posted October 15, 2016 Thanks for your reviews fishyfry, Monarcheon, & Luis Hernandez. I agree that it sounds pretty much like an organ. However, the first piece on the CD that I listened to was Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D minor. And the accordion sounded almost exactly like an organ. I guess they had increased the bass and put a lot of reverb in the recording to make it sound so. So that first impression might have influenced me to be biased to composing as for an organ. Besides none of the other pieces on the CD were written specifically for the accordion but were arrangements of pieces for other instruments or instrumental combinations. It is also true that the sound of the software accordion is pretty much like that of an organ, which in its turn is contributing to the piece sounding like an organ. I have been putting the finishing touches on a second soliloquy for accordion which I might post soon. I hope that in it I would have succeeded in writing more idiomatically for the accordion. Quote
